Our deck is suspended above the Howe Sound. We have ocean, islands, and mountains that kiss the sea. All in our back yard.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And this window? It’s what makes it all usable, and ties together the inside and outside spaces. At our very own home #PUREBossShack, our pass-through counters connects the kitchen directly to the deck, so the view isn’t outside the house, it’s part of it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Morning coffee in the open air.
Sunset drinks with the light moving.
And friends leaning on the counter while Don cooks us a yummy meal.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It feels like a European bistro, if that bistro hovers over the Pacific. ;)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And because this is real exposure, full sun, constant winter rain, the odd snowfall, and salty air…this counter surface has to perform.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Not every countertop belongs outside. And I was guided to use the best material that can handle the Canadian elements in all seasons.

We chose Dekton for its durability and UV stability. And I chose a darker, textured tone outside to anchor the exterior. And a lighter Dekton inside to sit softly against our limewashed walls.

And because this is real exposure, full sun, constant winter rain, the odd snowfall, and salty air…this counter surface has to perform.

Not every countertop belongs outside. And I was guided to use the best material that can handle the Canadian elements in all seasons.

We chose Dekton for its durability and UV stability. And I chose a darker, textured tone outside to anchor the exterior. And a lighter Dekton inside to sit softly against our limewashed walls.

When we started talking about their ‘whys’, they mentioned warmth and beautiful materials. We layered tones and textures with handmade zellige tiles, quartzite slabs, natural stone, and pebble mosaics specially under the soaker tub. I love when a bathroom stops being just a bathroom and becomes the room in your home that you genuinely love the most.

Tuesday night at the NKBA Western Canada Awards, our incredible team at PURE Design was shortlisted for 11 awards, and I was named one of 6 finalists for Designer of the Year, Western Canada.

I won this award two years ago. Let’s see if lightning strikes twice. Haha…

A little fun and unbelievable side note: when I lived as a ‘fire tower lookout’ for Alberta Forestry in my early 20s, my 100’ fire tower was struck by lightning, twice. And let me tell you how wild it feels to have it go through you. Luckily the metal tower was well grounded. This is a fun story, ask me if you’re curious! 🧐
