Scientists have discovered at least 11 new species in Cambodia's karst ecosystem, a dramatic landscape of caves and rocks that create a unique isolated habitat.
These new species, as well as other endangered animals in the region highlight the importance of protecting these rare ecosystems.

[Photo of the week] During the mobula ray’s migration season, which runs from late April to July, the marine animals form massive aggregations called fevers.
The region is home to at least five species of mobula rays. Mobula munkiana, commonly known as Munk’s devil ray or Munk’s pygmy devil ray, is the most common, and is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
The other four species are much scarcer due to slow reproductive rates and population decline due to fishing bycatch. The bentfin devil ray (Mobula thurstoni), spinetail devil ray (Mobula mobular) and sicklefin devil ray (Mobula tarapacana) are all critically endangered. The oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) is listed as endangered.

This device could reduce shark deaths
Shark bycatch is a huge problem in longline fisheries, but a new, simple and cheap metal device could drastically cut accidental shark deaths. Here’s how it works.

The idea of sending heavy machinery down to the very, very deep sea to extract rare minerals "can feel like science fiction,” said Pulitzer Center grantee Elizabeth Claire Alberts (@elizabeth_the_journo).
Reporting for @mongabay and @CNN, Alberts and CNN Senior Reporter Kara Fox followed the development of the nascent deep sea mining industry and how it’s become intertwined with defense priorities in the U.S. and China.
Deep sea mining is not a full-fledged industry yet, as companies are still developing the technologies needed to extract and process minerals from the sea floor.
“I think if it does go forward, it’s going to change the oceans as we know them,” Alberts said.
Pulitzer Center Editorial Intern Ella Beiser spoke with Alberts about challenges of reporting about the sea floor, accountability, and the future of the deep sea mining industry.

In 2023, researchers from @projectceti caught something extraordinary on camera: sperm whales not only attending a birth but actively helping both mother and newborn.
Some of the whales present were not even related to the mother, known as Rounder. This is the only known example of marine mammals helping in the birth of a non-kin.

What happens when a global "superfood" trend fades?
In Bolivia’s southern Altiplano, the 2010-2014 quinoa boom brought temporary economic gains to rural Indigenous communities. But today, the region is paying the ecological price. Intensified monocultures have left behind a legacy of soil degradation, erosion, and biodiversity loss.
Compounding these hurdles are shifting regional weather patterns. A 15% drop in precipitation over the last 25 years has brought a wave of unseasonal rains, frequent frosts, and at least 18 new agricultural pests. For the 70,000 families depending on the crop, farming is becoming increasingly volatile.
While farmers cultivate a premium, nutrient-dense variant known as Royal Quinoa, a lack of direct market pathways means much of their harvest is smuggled into Peru and sold without its premium distinction. Experts argue that without robust public export policies and sustainable practices, the future of this ancient Andean staple remains at risk.

A new AI-powered camera system could make road crossings less of a nightmare for koalas.
Koalas face multiple threats to their survival including deforestation, urbanization, diseases and bushfires. As humans encroach into their habitats, they are forced to cross roads to move across fragmented forests. Because of this, vehicle strikes have also become a major cause of koala deaths.
Scientists at Griffith University in Australia are now working to detect koalas crossing the roads in real-time. Watch this video to learn more.

How far can China’s oceanographic research fleet go?
A joint investigation by Mongabay and CNN revealed that, in the context of deep-sea mining operations, vessels from China’s research fleet visited Chinese naval bases, turned off their Automatic Identification Systems, and entered other countries’ Exclusive Economic Zones.
Journalists Elizabeth Alberts (@elizabeth_the_journo) and Kara Fox (@karafox10) speak to iMEdD about the idea behind the investigation, their data-centric approach, the methodology, and the steps they followed.

Μέχρι πού μπορεί να φτάσει ο κινεζικός ωκεανογραφικός ερευνητικός στόλος;

Camera traps in China captured something scientists had never filmed before: a Siberian tigress walking with five cubs in the wild.
Tigers usually give birth to just one to four cubs, making this an exceptionally rare sight. The footage was recorded in Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park, one of the most important refuges for the endangered Siberian tiger.
Just a few decades ago, fewer than a dozen tigers remained in China. Today there are about 70 — and moments like this suggest conservation efforts may finally be working.

[Photo of the Week] With their bright reddish-golden manes, golden-headed lion tamarins are a striking symbol of Brazil’s primate heritage.
But these primates face a crisis: populations have declined nearly 60% in just three decades due to habitat fragmentation.
While they thrive in traditional cacao agroforestry, rising coffee monocultures and pastures threaten their future.
Community efforts in Bahia are now working to protect this endangered primate.

In Benin, mangroves are traditionally protected by the Zangbéto, a Vodun deity believed to forbid the cutting of wood under penalty of a curse.
Thanks to this spiritual practice, more than 500 hectares (1,200 acres) of mangroves have been preserved over the past decade. Today, major climate bodies increasingly recognize the importance of Indigenous knowledge and traditional governance in protecting biodiversity.
Practiced by more than 60 million people worldwide, Vodun is rooted in the connection between humans, nature, and spirits. From Cotonou to Dado, journalist Jahëna Louisin journeys into the heart of Vodun practices that safeguard the environment.
