Today is National Road Trip Day! Long before social media, mid-century Americans showed off their travels by sending postcards to loved ones back home. In the 1930s, publisher Curt Teich, an immigrant and pioneer of the offset printing process, brought from Germany to the U.S. what would become a wildly successful design trend of bright, graphically illustrated linen postcards, some of which are pictured here.
The Library of Virginia Visual Studies department has a large collection of postcards and one of our Pinterest boards displays some of these "large letter" delights. View using the link in our bio.

Join us for a free noon talk on Wednesday, May 27, with historian Kathleen DuVal on her book, “Independence Lost: Lives on the Edge of the American Revolution.”
While citizens of the 13 rebelling colonies came to blows with the British Empire over tariffs and parliamentary representation, the situation on the rest of the American continent was equally complicated. In the Gulf of Mexico, Spanish forces clashed with Britain’s strained army to carve up the Gulf Coast, as both sides competed for allegiances with Chickasaw, Choctaw and Creek nations who inhabited the region. Meanwhile, African American slaves were finding opportunities to expand their freedoms. DuVal reveals that an individual’s motives were as important in their allegiance to the Revolution as the ideals of liberty and freedom the Founders espoused.

For Jewish American Heritage Month, read about Edward Nathan Calisch, who, at age 26, took over the pulpit of Beth Ahabah, the sixth-oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. He steered Beth Ahabah away from earlier Orthodox leanings and toward full participation in Reform Judaism.
In 1892, he was one of the first rabbis to deliver an opening prayer at the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the next 50 years, he gave hundreds of speeches in Virginia, throughout the country and overseas. At Mount Vernon in 1899, Calisch gave the address and benediction for a nationwide Masonic celebration of the centennial of George Washington's death. He was the only person on the program who was neither a high-ranking Freemason nor a government official.

The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce we have a new digital collection online just in time for the VA250 celebrations! The Land Office Military Certificates collection documents the second step of a three-step process for Revolutionary War veterans to obtain bounty land in return for their service.
The certificates are printed forms filled in with the name of the individual, his rank, whether he served in a state or a continental line unit and the length of such service. In 2022, we digitized the microfilm, which includes the records for around 7,500 Virginia Revolutionary War veterans' claims. We are excited that these records, so important to our understanding of the experiences of those who fought for independence, are now freely available online.
The collection link is in our bio.

The Library of Virginia, in partnership with Old Dominion University, invites you to the opening celebration for our new exhibition, “Envisioning Revolution: Virginians in Action,” on Saturday, June 13. The exhibition will be on display in the Library's gallery through Dec. 31, 2026, to commemorate Virginia’s role in the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The exhibition features artwork from students in ODU's Department of Art that envisions Virginians featured in legislative petitions submitted to the state between 1776 and 1786.
A variety of VA250-related activities will be available to visitors during the June 13 opening day celebration. Exhibition tours will begin at 1 p.m. and continue each half hour up until 3 p.m. ODU student artists and exhibition curators will be on hand to discuss the exhibition and its works. Visitors will also have the option of watching a livestream of the TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures symposium or taking part in a VA250 Revolutionary-era transcription event.
