Let’s start the OFFICIAL SPRING ( going to be summer) from Isola’s Sewerfolk at our second location Shadowbox in Brattle Sq!
Isola works with mixed media, using found objects and recycled materials to create their pieces.With a background in traditional media and a deep love for fauna and fable, Murray references the animals and plants tied to specific sites, drawing on their symbolic histories to create characters that feel both familiar and delightfully absurd.
We have had Isola’s beloved “Tired Cliches” back in December of 2024, Shadowbox welcomes Isola to continue her whimsical world making in Brattle Sq.
We will have a gathering for our inaugural Shadowbox with Isola on June 13 4-5pm, stay tuned!

I’ve been holding this quietly for a little while since the first time Chenoa and I talked about having her to join the ongoing conversation about the standing labors in the museums.Now I am just excited to finally share that dear friend & awesome writer curator Chenoa Baker @chenoa.e.baker will be the next curator/writer for Field Study of the Leaning Bodies / Traces, the ongoing participatory installation I have been developing through Behind VA Shadows.
Following the inaugural color field, Morning Sky Blue, curated by always-the-best Tessa Bachi Haas @tteesssssss, Chenoa has selected the next color for the project. The new color field will be revealed in June and painted into the gallery in July, where it will live side by side with Tessa’s contribution as the installation continues to grow through accumulated testing marks, pauses, conversations, and bodily echoes held in the space.
What moves me deeply about inviting Chenoa into this project is her sensitivity toward labor, craft, cultural memory, and the ways writing itself can hold people with care. I’m grateful her voice and perspective will become part of this growing archive.

Behind VA Shadows Catalog was introduced at the “Artists’ Books as Sites of Resistance” panel and the full-house audience got to touch and flip through our publication! A fellow former VA from the Broad reached out and we always love meeting fellow VAs!!! Artists’ files, artists’ books, and zines are at the centre of the conference’s many vibrant discussions on resistance. We learned about very important preservation work for contemporary art practices, such as the Contemporary Catalogs Project at @metlibrary and the Collaborative ART Archive (CARTA) by @internetarchive and the New York Art Resources Consortium.
Among the many many great tours and events: we got to see the exhibit “Petits actes de résistance / Small Acts of resistance” featuring works by ARLIS members at @artexte , among the wonderful collection at Artexte; a tour of the library, archives, and reading rooms at @canadiancentreforarchitecture and @natgallerycan .

“when blue meets blue” is a solo exhibition by Joanna Tam rooted in her relationship to the ocean since growing up in Hong Kong. The exhibition brings together photographs of the ocean and sky from both her hometown and her new home in the U.S., creating a space to think through distance, memory, movement, and longing.
For this exhibition, Joanna also invited her friend blu to contribute a poem relating to the ocean and sky. As they shared with Joanna, the poem “moon, sea, bread and blood in twenty-six acts” “is about me, you, and every single person who will stop to read it, and every person we think of in relation to each other and this poem.”
During the reception, Joanna played an audio recording from blu, who attended the gathering through their voice.
blu (she/they) is a self-taught writer born in Ayiti, where they lived for fifteen years before immigrating to the United States. Their work explores the sensuality of life, the politics of existence, and the textures of memory. They write to remember.

Shadowbox, hello! Meet our second location of Behind VA Shadows, kicked off today with our dear friend Isola’s new work ( still install in progress! )Located at One Brattle Square, Shadowbox is a 96” high, 32” wide, 2 ft deep space previously hosted by our friend Kyoko.
Small in scale but open in possibility, Shadowbox embraces the overlooked architectural gap, the in-between space, the leftover corner that quietly exists alongside the city’s larger structures. Titling her presentation “Behind VA Shadows Catalog: A Socially-Engaged Art Project’s Approach to Resist Disappearance,” Nemo is very excited to discuss it with art librarians and information professionals in the GLAM sector.
Speaking in her roles as the Editorial and Archival Lead of Behind VA Shadows and a graduate student in archival studies and libraries and information studies, Nemo will share the stories behind our process of making the catalog. Looking from the frameworks of community archives and artists’ books, Nemo reflects on how this publication can serve as an archives of Behind VA Shadows’ work and the community we have been building. Outside of the institutional space, Behind VA Shadows catalog exists a more permanent piece of evidence in telling the stories of VAs and celebrating our existence and creativity.
