Robert Ginyard. May 18, 1967 to May 22, 2026.

Today we lost one of the architects. The Harlem legend who, alongside DJ E-Z Rock, gave us a record that still moves every floor it touches.

Released in the summer of 1988 through Profile Records, “It Takes Two” became the centerpiece of their debut album of the same name, recorded right across the river at Hillside Sound Studio in Englewood, New Jersey.   That James Brown break, that Lyn Collins “Think (About It)” sample, and a hook that became part of the DNA of hip-hop. Both the single and the album went platinum. 

The man helped bring rap and dance together and pushed the culture into the mainstream when that crossover still felt brand new. He and E-Z Rock met in the fifth grade and built it from the ground up.  “Joy and Pain.” “Get on the Dance Floor.” Records that never left the rotation.

E-Z Rock left us in 2014. Now the duo is whole again.

Rob, thank you for the music, the memories, and one of the greatest party records ever made. Hip-hop celebrates you forever.

Lenny S @kodaklens was in the studio when Pharrell built the beat from scratch then stepped in the booth and laid the hook right in front of him.

One group text to Jay and hip hop later, everybody pulled up. Jay went in and finished “I’m a Hustler” in 15 minutes. The video was already locked. The single was already planned. And just like that — it was all gone.

That’s how history actually gets made.
