I joined @dosomething as CEO 5 years ago in the midst of the pandemic, the racial reckoning and a moment of transformation for a nearly 30 year old nonprofit. I was charged with building the 3.0 edition of this well-known nonprofit to meet the needs of digitally native Gen Z and Gen Alpha youth. I am an achiever who takes responsibility seriously, so I accepted the challenge.

I dropped this leadership mixtape to share my musings about the journey over the last 5 years.

I know we all love a good highlight reel and TL:DR isn’t just a phrase (one I learned when I first started at DoSomething, ironically), it’s our new way of life. In case you don’t watch it, the upshot is that I feel the weight of leading while Black, as a mom, a wife, a daughter and friend; AND young people still have a hunger to do good, but need committed adults in their corner. That’s my key role as CEO of the largest digitally powered nonprofit for young people committed to doing good — be the coach, champion and cheerleader for today’s youth.

There have been many spinning plates and challenges these last 5 years, but also some wins and moments of hope and glimmer of opportunity.

If we’re keeping it real, there are a lot of people who benefit from folks not knowing, not being civically engaged, not voting. Where is the civic education happening?

A recent jury verdict finding major tech platforms liable for addicting young users could mark a turning point for digital well-being.

On Mornings with Zerlina @zerlinamaxwell, DoSomething’s CEO DeNora Getachew @democracyninja talked about what this moment means for young people growing up online.

For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, devices have always been part of daily life, but many young people are also recognizing the downsides to 24/7 connectivity, including comparing themselves to others, feeling the pressure of constant connection, and navigating platforms designed to keep them scrolling.

At DoSomething, we hear it directly from our young members: safety and well-being have been one of their top concerns for the past five years.

But the story isn’t all negative.
Online spaces can also spark creativity, build community, and help young people organize for real-world impact.

The question now is, how can we build a healthier digital future?
