A sneak peek into my process creating the illustrations for SONG OF THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS, written by Lesléa Newman, coming Spring ‘27 from @enchantedlion books. I’ve connected so much with this book—besides the gorgeous text—on a tactile level. The hand painted paper collage chose me, not the other way around. I realize now that it’s connected to seeing the parchment Scrolls in person, touring the labs at @theisraelmuseumjerusalem and feeling the dryness of air and ground at Qumran. The dryness and weight of the papers have gotten in to my skin and muscle memory. It’s possible that this book has permanently changed my work and my perception.

Shahrzad and the Angry King by Nahid Kazemi, has been peeping at me from my bookshelf, and every time I look at it, I think of a world that is so much in need of healing.
If only it was as easy as telling stories…perhaps it is.
At least to make our hearts sing and dance.

Truly, the books we read are ever so intertwined with real life, and I could think of at least one angry king (but then, there are so many more)…whose anger, belligerence, hate and ego, is affecting all our lives in little and not so little ways.

It’s ironic that the Canada based author-illustrator Nahid Kazemi is of Iranian origin, but as with most stories, this book and this post too can be interpreted in many way.
As I wrote my thoughts down in this post, I couldn’t help but think of the ‘king’ closer home.

Truly, the books we read are ever so intertwined with real life, and I could think of at least one angry king (but then, there are so many more)…whose anger, belligerence, hate and ego, is affecting all our lives in little and not so little ways.

It’s ironic that the Canada based author-illustrator Nahid Kazemi is of Iranian origin, but as with most stories, this book and this post too can be interpreted in many way.
As I wrote my thoughts down in this post, I couldn’t help but think of the ‘king’ closer home.

“On the subject of Truman’s name, I can report it was a long and painful journey, full of misses. For, you see, not unlike the toads I write, I too can take a long time in my search for perfection and, indeed, suffer all the way to the good and happy ending.

Huntington Toad was his original name. I came up with it in a Notting Hill café on the morning after the night I dreamed him up, and it stayed for some months. Then I changed it to Alexander Von Biscuit. It felt like the kind of name to frame the persona of my self-centered toad. Then I tweaked it to Alexander Fon Cracker. I stayed with it long enough for it to make it into print in the Israeli edition.

The German translator was not unaware of my leading-toad name insecurity, having received several drafts with various names, and developed his own appetite for renaming the toad. In a heartfelt email he gave me a proper explanation of why the German toad should be named Konrad Kröterich von Keks. It was a persuasive case. I didn’t buy it. But feeling I hadn’t found the real name yet, I had little to push back with.

The Italian translator had the urge to call him Corrado Rospigliosi. Fine.

It was when we began working on the American publication that I had the revelation that I shouldn’t be looking for the name of a king or a baron, but that of a president. And suddenly I knew it was going to be Truman, and that it had always been Truman. And so — two years into the making of the book and three publications too late — the quest for the perfect name came to its inevitable conclusion.”
