Thanks to @platjournal for including “A DEEPER STYLE: From Mattes to Mashups” in Plat 8.0: Simplicity.

In tapping into the American phenomenon of high-school prom and the social media ecology surrounding it, Prom Picture enlists contemporary image culture as a foil to envision a culture of its own. The project constructs an image that is both unique to the prom-goer while celebrating the larger collective and emerging cultural phenomenon surrounding prom in Detroit. Today, the two aspects of mattes from the late 19th century—scenographic illusion and efficiency—remain relevant to the status of the image and offer a framework for discussing contemporary image-making strategies. When image-making occurs with such ease and proliferation, the image-object, digitally malleable yet physically present and complete, creates a space to project new realities, provide agency, and increase visibility.
