Not sure what Clean Bus became, but “clean bus for borders” was an oft-used phrase on tour bus on early US tours as we approached the Canadian frontier. Couple of titles maintained, Stormy Clouds and Life’s An Ocean, despite my early critique that it “needs structure” - which I think was the (erroneous) opinion of then #selectmagazine editor @johnharriswriter about all @officialtheverve songs 🤣. 5 promo poster for “Skip Spence” ; )

33 years ago my then (legendary) girlfriend @berenyi_miki asked me if I’d seen Pulp lately, since her band @lushbandofficial had just played some shows with them and @blurofficial for @lesinrocks in France. I said I hadn’t cos they’d been around for ages and I’d kinda dismissed them. She persuaded me they were worth a second look and we went off to see them - at Brighton Uni I think it was. Anyway, turns out she was right, something had indeed changed, and much of it was wrapped up in OU, which turned out to be the first Pulp record I worked on as a PR at the still nascent #savageandbest (might actually have still been Best in Press?). Hearing the song live last night at their incredible pop concert in Birmingham, I was struck by how much it serves as a blueprint for the glorious release of Common People and how all the elements were already in place.It was released on Gift Recordings which was an offshoot of Sheffield’s Warp set up specifically for the purpose. We launched it, pretty much literally, with a local balloon race. Tbh nobody much cared for another little while yet, but the fuse had been lit 🧨
