Invitational residency/project space in western MA

For over a year, I’ve been working on a project, Telharmonium, in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Holyoke is a post-industrial city that gave birth, over a century ago, to the first musical synthesizer. Named the “Telharmonium,” the 200-ton instrument played its electronic music over telephone lines. Although the Telharmonium played in New York City, the first public version of the instrument was manufactured in Holyoke, a former mill town and center of American industry.
The project, a generative film and sound installation, had its premiere at @matta___________'s booth at Artissima last October, where it entered the collection of Castello di Rivoli. Bringing the piece back to @lower_cavity in Holyoke was a kind of homecoming for the work. Here, Telharmonium is expanded for the lower_cavity space, including multiple screens, along with sensors and a camera that monitor the galleries for changes in the environment. Although Telharmonium is not a site-specific work, it is a work about a specific place, and to show it in lower_cavity’s former mill building, only a couple of blocks away from where the instrument was created, gave the installation an intensity it won’t receive anywhere else.
I’ll post more about Telharmonium in the coming month, but here are a few iPhone images and videos to give you an idea of the incredible subterranean space. Thanks to everyone who trekked out for the opening. The show remains open until May 31st, when we will do a closing event. Contact @lower_cavity for more information.

A few images of new textile works produced by @luluvarona during her three-week stay at l_c, which just wrapped up yesterday. This was the second of two residencies l_c hosted in partnership with @fr.moca, which provided time, space, and a modest material budget to support research and the production of new work.

lower_cavity is pleased to announce the upcoming presentation of @johnmenick 's "Telharmonium," a generative film installation developed during his residency. The project will be on view by appointment April 26–May 31, with an opening reception April 26, 4–7 pm.
Filmed in Holyoke over one year, "Telharmonium" explores the automation of culture through one of the earliest electronic instruments. Built in the 1900s by Thaddeus Cahill, the Telharmonium was a two-hundred-ton organ-like instrument whose music was transmitted over telephone networks—the first time a single electrical current could imitate multiple instruments. Its first public version was built in Holyoke, just blocks from lower_cavity.
Like the player piano and phonograph, the Telharmonium was an early attempt to automate cultural labor. For Menick, these tensions echo today's debates over AI and creative work: just as the Telharmonium displaced live musicians, AI now imitates artistic styles with unsettling accuracy.
The film is a complex machine, algorithmically changing in real time—its montage and sound controlled by software routing economic simulation data to video and audio. Footage shot with thermal, infrared, drone, and night vision cameras is intercut with speculative reconstructions of the Telharmonium and AI-generated imagery, while a synthetic voice speaks in fragments about telephony, telepathy, and automation. The generative score was composed with @ex.wiish .
For its presentation at lower_cavity, the work operates as a "lights out" factory—running continuously, gathering data while visitors are absent, unfolding over several weeks on its own programmed circadian rhythm.
"Telharmonium" was produced by @matta___________ , Milan, with additional support from @kadistkadist . Premiered at Artissima 2025; collection of Castello di Rivoli.
Menick's work has been exhibited at dOCUMENTA(13), MoMA/PS1, Palais de Tokyo, and CCA Wattis. johnmenick.com
Shirken's work has been presented at Pioneer Works, Cannes, IFFR, and Brooklyn Academy of Music. benshirken.com

lower_cavity has gone a bit dark recently (I had two of my own exhibitions back to back) but things are gearing up again. As winter finally begins to recede we're very pleased to welcome @luluvarona as the second of two artists-in-residents l_c is hosting in partnership with @fr.moca .
María Lucía “Lulu” Varona Borges (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1993) is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on embroidery, textiles, and the study of Puerto Rican social history. Her work weaves together labor memories, diaspora narratives, and the legacy of the needlework industry, using cross-stitch and other manual techniques as conceptual tools to examine labor, territory, and community.
Varona studied Multidisciplinary Visual Arts at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. She has been an artist-in-residence at Art Omi (2023), the International Studio & Curatorial Program – ISCP (2018), Flux Factory (2019), ACRE (2021), and the Independent Studies Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (2020). Her work has been exhibited in Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the United States, and is part of private and institutional collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art.

l_c is pleased to announce the arrival of its latest artist-in-residence, MA-based artist @hamzatincorporated . This will be not only the first residency of 2026, but also the first of two residencies l_c is hosting in partnership with @fr.moca . Over the next four weeks, Incorporated will be conducting research towards new work that will eventually be presented as part of FR. MoCA's programming later in the year.
Hamzat Incorporated (NE Raheem, b. 1995) is a Nigeria-born artist whose identity operates as an entanglement of corporate entity, public figure, and private citizen. He earned a BFA in Conceptual Art from The Cooper Union in New York and an MFA in Stone Carving from Kyoto Seika University in Kyoto, Japan. Centered on the art of being an artist, his practice spans sculpture, drawing, and branding, treating authorship, labor, and value as materials in themselves. His work adopts corporate and branding structures as both subject and method, positioning names, images, exhibitions, and public interventions as strategic acts of valuation. His work has been presented with Steven Zevitas Gallery in Boston, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in California, and Harlesden High Street Gallery in London.

Documentation of @blinn_and_lambert 's "Couplets," the most recent project in lower_cavity's CHAMBER series, is now up on the l_c site. It was really great to host Kyle and Nick and see these works (two of them brand new) come to life in the space.

On Sunday, January 11th, from 2 – 5 pm, lower_cavity will be hosting a closing event for the two most recent projects.
The first of these is "Everybody Here Wants You," an exhibition conceived by the most recent artist-in-residence @helmet_lung , featuring works by Li, @jepisalla , @carrie.yamaoka , and #davidnelson (1960-2013). Utilizing various spaces across the two l_c buildings and materials sourced on site, Li's project actively materializes ongoing reflections and resonance among the four artists' oeuvre into sequences of site-responsive installations. The exhibition is accompanied with a commissioned essay from William Wiebe. During the event on the 11th, Episalla, Li and Yamaoka will be present for a guided tour through the exhibition.
Alongside Li’s exhibition, l_c is hosting "Couplets," the latest project in its ongoing CHAMBER series, a suite of film- and slide-based works by the collaborative duo @blinnandlambert (AKA Nicholas Steindorf and Kyle Williams). Drawn together by their shared backgrounds in painting, which led them to their work in moving-image, installation, and projected light, their collaboration is shaped by a sensibility for deadpan humor and pacing, and by a process that centers on experimentation, invention, and material exploration. Their work explores questions rooted in their history with painting: How does an image hold time? What is the tension between material and presence?
This will be the last chance to see these projects in person before they come down, so if you find yourself in Western MA that weekend, please come by.
Thanks and best wishes for the New Year.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
