Jazz Holmes is a studio artist currently residing in Denver, Colorado. Holmes grew up throughout the deep south, mostly in rural Black sharecropping areas that were owned by her family. She is a graduate with a BFA from the University of West Florida and an MFA from Colorado State University. Her works are centered around uplifting the Black Agricultural South and highlighting the perpetual influence it has within American culture through culinary subjects.

Rochelle Johnson (b. 1964) is an artist who was born and raised  in Denver, Colorado. Focusing on the color indigo as a personal  and historical symbol, she challenges conventional portrayals of race in art, particularly those rooted in Western ideals. Her  work forges connections between personal and collective  experiences, frequently addressing themes of resilience, beauty, and the continuous journey of self-discovery within the  framework of Black identity.

In addition to creating in her studio, Johnson serves as a  teacher, mentor, and curator. She remains dedicated to  exploring and sharing diverse narratives through her art.

Surrounding this figure, bursts of yellow  radiate warmth and joy, representing the power of community, while soft hues of purple evoke healing and tranquility. Bold splashes of yellow evoke optimism  and hope, while vibrant green suggests growth and renewal.  The fiery red accents pulsate with energy, representing the  struggles and triumphs of the Pan-African movement. Together,  these colors create a dynamic interplay that captures the spirit  of freedom and resilience. The figurative abstract forms dance  across the canvas, inviting viewers to interpret their own  journey toward emancipation and unity.

✨Artist highlight - Rochelle Johnson✨

Rochelle Johnson (b. 1964) is an artist who was born and raised  in Denver, Colorado. Focusing on the color indigo as a personal  and historical symbol, she challenges conventional portrayals of race in art, particularly those rooted in Western ideals. Her  work forges connections between personal and collective  experiences, frequently addressing themes of resilience, beauty, and the continuous journey of self-discovery within the  framework of Black identity.

In addition to creating in her studio, Johnson serves as a  teacher, mentor, and curator. She remains dedicated to  exploring and sharing diverse narratives through her art.

“I Lift My Eyes” is a vibrant painting that draws inspiration from  Bob Thompson’s silhouettes. Dominated by deep indigo, it  symbolizes the strength and resilience of Black identity. The  silhouette at the center reaches upward, embodying a sense of  hope and aspiration. Surrounding this figure, bursts of yellow  radiate warmth and joy, representing the power of community, while soft hues of purple evoke healing and tranquility. The black shapes act like improvisation, responding to the structure of the room rather than fighting it. Instead of painting on the wall, the mural plays the building like an instrument.
