Munich's Rites of Spring Fest is back at Kafe Kult on May 8 and 9, doubled to two days, with @raein.band and @weatherday_pc on the same flyer to test exactly that question.

The first version is, by any reading, real emo: the Forlì band credited with carrying late 90s screamo into Europe in the early 2000s. The second is a Swedish noise-pop project a copypasta purist would refuse on principle.

@corechaosconcerts started in 2020 as a pandemic-era music blog Jany Irro ran solo, and has since turned into a four-person collective running about 30 shows a year in Munich, plus a fake emo counterpart festival in autumn called The Summer Ends.

Year one of @ritesofspringfest (April 2025) sold out, pulled people in from Lithuania, Portugal, the Netherlands and the US, and made it obvious there was room to expand. Year two pushed harder, with Jany pushing especially hard on a FLINTA-fronted newcomer wave across the lineup.

We can‘t wait to host Chicagos screamo cult legends Lord Snow on their first-ever Munich appearance, reunited with original vocalist An Lacy. Since forming in 2011, Lord Snow have become one of DIY screamo’s most distinctive and technically intense bands, blending chaotic precision, jazz-like dynamics, and raw emotional force into a sound influenced by bands like Daitro, La Quiete, Funeral Diner, and Ampere. With An Lacy returning to reinterpret both old and newer material, the band enters a powerful new chapter that reflects on their past while sounding more urgent than ever.

Joining them are Vancouver’s Emma Goldman on their first European tour ever. Named after the revolutionary anarchist, the band channels the political tension of their hometown into explosive screamo that swings between hardcore breakdowns, frantic energy, and rave-like momentum. Their live shows feel equally like a cathartic collapse and a call to revolt - chaotic, emotional, and impossible to stand still to.

ACHTUNG ACHTUNG: HUMMM SE DENN NOCH ALLE? MIDWEST EMO & SCREAMO TOGETHER?!

Thank God HUMMM from Barcelona have higher standards than our shallow pun. The relatively fresh band plays a captivating blend of screamo, math and emo with plenty of Midwest vibes, and is part of their local My Heart Your Mouth microcosm - helping to reaffirm the emo community in their hometown, which we feel deserves much more than just a honorary mention.

Their self-description - “CATHARTIC MUSIC, POWERFUL VOCALS AND CATCHY TWINKLY RIFFS.” - could easily sound cliché in less capable hands, but the Catalonian sextet delivers on that promise with conviction & class.

Our Spanish might suck but their streaming bio: “gritos, tiroriros y sonidos para corazoncitos grandes”, apparently roughly translates to: “screams, sounds and noise for big little hearts.” We’re curious to find out what that really means and even more so how it translates live, on stage.

The possible future of real emo and screamo is one of the things we want to explore with our Rites of Spring festival, and we’re therefore delighted to invite Leda, one of Italy’s più recente and più promettente screamo bands (despite the scene’s fierce competition!), to Monaco di Baviera, often considered one of Italy’s northernmost cities (not that we’d necessarily agree tho tbh).
Their self-proclaimed mission to find the peace (and perhaps the solace?) they haven’t discovered yet is vividly reflected in their music: surprisingly bright, drifting blasts of guitar work paired with all the cathartic heavyweight we love so much about Italian screamo.
Their lyric “tutto è in fiamme / tutto è oro” (“everything is ablaze / everything is gold”) offers a fitting glimpse into the bittersweet nature of their sound and perhaps into picture we hope to ignite with Rites of Spring as well.

Older Friends are among our new pals from Berlin and its bubbling DIY scene. “Too old to play screamo, too young to not die,” claims their bio - what’s the maximum legal age for the Screamoschein, and are they really that much older than us?
Anyway, we firmly plead for an inclusive and open approach to Screamo across all ages (with an oath to the copypasta) and are delighted to have the trio onboard with their refreshing take on all things REAL, ENERGETIC, AND SOMEWHAT HATEFUL.

Their songs bounce between twinkly, playful Midwest-emo passages and bursts of full-on screamo chaos - the kind of contrast that keeps you smiling right until the next emotional gut punch lands.

Lyrically, they move between German and English, which adds another layer to their already charmingly chaotic mix. Beneath the sparkle and the noise, their lyrics often tackle themes of self-determination as a woman in a patriarchal society, calling out its many absurdities and injustices.

Obacht! A band name like Moral Bombing already speaks for itself (they haven’t even needed a press text so far). The band from western Germany has no trouble living up to it: “geht halt einfach krass aufs Maul,” as our very own Jany puts it.
Their blazing brand of emoviolence and (organic) metalcore cuts through bone (perhaps even crushing it!) and close to the heart, too. We obviously love bands that balance grinding force with raw intensity and emotional depth.
Their music acts “as a cathartic space — honest, vulnerable and powerful,” dealing with themes of “healing, love, trauma, intense emotions and spirituality,” as the band describes it. We nod in approval and are delighted to host the Dortmunder*innen’s first show in Munich at our Rites of Spring festival.
10/10 energetic.
10/10 powerful.
10/10 somewhat hateful!

What short-sighted fools we were: given the tempestuous nature of the Italian band, we always assumed “Stormo” must mean “storm”, as in the German Sturm (which had us briefly wondering whether something like “STORMO & DRANG” might exist). But it actually means “flock,” and perhaps that’s just as fitting.
Their nonstop fusillades of hardcore, screamo, and noise — with touches of black metal — swarm the room relentlessly, faster than you could scream or shout F O R T I S S I M O, taking no prisoners. Guaranteed free of fake-emo! Fireproof clothing recommended. We’ve been there. Believe us.

Formed in 2007 in the Dolomite Alps region of Italy with a deep admiration for their native country’s hardcore punk luminaries in La Quiete and Raein, as well as eighties and nineties cult heroes in Negazione, Wretched and Indigesti. Stormos steady rise from unassuming beginnings has been one of consistently stirring songwriting. Having amassed over 400 shows across Europe and the UK - including support slots to Converge, Full of Hell and La Dispute, as well as appearances at Fluff Fest - Stormos next chapter sees the band fully come of age.
