Boating and Watercraft Safety 🛟

Lakes, rivers, and coastal waters offer great recreational opportunities, but boating requires preparation and respect for the water. Adhering to watercraft safety guidelines prevents drowning and serious mishaps.

⛵ Wear a Life Jacket:
Ensure every passenger has a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD) that fits properly. Most boating fatalities result from drowning, often involving victims not wearing PFDs.

🚣 Avoid Boating Under the Influence (BUI):
Alcohol affects judgment, vision, and coordination. The sun, wind, and the boat's motion can accelerate impairment.

🚤 Monitor Weather:
Summer storms roll in quickly. Check forecasts before departing and keep a weather radio handy to track changing conditions.

🛶 File a Float Plan:
Tell a responsible person your destination and expected return time. This ensures authorities are alerted immediately if you become overdue.

🛥️ Maintain Awareness:
Watch for other vessels, swimmers, and debris. Strictly adhere to all navigational rules and posted no-wake zones.
Equip Your Vessel: Ensure your craft is registered and carries the required gear, including flares, horns, and extinguishers. Confirm the operator is properly trained and licensed.

Two #USArmyReserve Soldiers assigned to the 87th Training Division went above and beyond their training mission during Guardian Response 2026, stopping to assist victims of a serious crash on U.S. Highway 50.
Maj. Matthew Killcrease and Sgt. 1st Class Ashley Baker immediately stopped traffic in both directions on a curved stretch of highway, preventing a potential multi-vehicle pileup involving several tractor-trailers. Killcrease, a traffic crash reconstructionist in his civilian career, provided a detailed statement to local law enforcement after witnessing the incident firsthand. The two Soldiers were later awarded a challenge coin from the local sheriff's department.
The following day, Col. Aron Givelber, commander of the 1st Brigade, 87th Training Division, recognized Killcrease and Baker with U.S. Army Commendation Medals during a ceremony at Camp Atterbury.
"This is the 87th Training Division at its very best," said Command Sgt. Maj. Patrick Compton, command sergeant major of the 1st Brigade, 87th Training Division. "Our motto is 'Ready to Serve.'"
Killcrease and Baker serve as observer/controller-trainers with the 87th Training Division's 2nd Mission Command Training Division, based in Birmingham, Alabama.

Maj. Gen. Patricia Wallace, 81st Readiness Division Commanding General, presented Ms. Miller, a General Two-Star note March 17, 2026, for her professionalism, care and responsiveness as the 81st Readiness Division Sexual Assault Response Coordinator.
The Army SHARP programs enhance Army readiness through the prevention of sexual assault, sexual harassment and associated retaliatory behaviors while providing comprehensive response capabilities.

OC/Ts, coach, mentor, and challenge units and individual Soldiers to think, adapt, and execute at high levels.

🚨 ATTENTION 🚨

The Army is adjusting the timeline of voluntary retirement to provide greater stability for transitioning Soldiers and their families while improving the Army's workforce planning.
Soldiers may submit voluntary retirement requests under this Army Directive at least 12 months, but no more than 24 months, before their requested retirement date with Permanent Change to timeline requesting voluntary Retirement for Soldiers E8-E9 transition plan includes O5 and O6 as well as W4 and W5.
