It’s a huge honor to be recognized on the @Forbes #ForbesAccessibility200 list as an innovator and impact-maker in the accessibility space for the second year in a row. As one of the only trans-led disability groups in the world (and on this list), we know just how important it is to lift up the work of the most marginalized disabled folks among us.

For National Women’s Health Month, we’re spotlighting mav vega (they/them), a writer, artist, and scholar who blends a deep love for humanity, liberation, and sociology with a commitment to truth-telling. As a fat, disabled, queer person of color, their work illuminates the realities of the world, examining the interconnected struggles and joys that define our shared existence.

Disabilities coded as gendered or “women’s” disabilities deserve equal respect, inclusion, and accommodation. From migraines to endometriosis, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome to myalgic encephalomyelitis, and from birth injuries to trauma from gender-based violence, we still have a fight to ensure that is the case. Folks from across the gender spectrum are harmed by the underfunding, undermining, and sidelining of women’s health.

mav’s experiences as a nonbinary person are “heavily shaped by womanhood” in their words. Patriarchy and gender-based violence are disabling, and in their essay “Pooled Blood” for Disability Culture Currents, mav shows how domestic violence and disability are deeply connected.

For Earth Day, we recognize that environmental justice, disability justice, and climate justice are one fight. From extreme heat and super storms, to fossil fuel extraction and processing, climate change and environmental racism are disabling.

Artificial intelligence (AI) data centers being built across the U.S. and globally are disabling people by poisoning our air and water and abusing workers.

Disabled people are also often left out of disaster planning and emergency infrastructure, and as climate disasters increase, disability support and infrastructure must too.

Together, disabled communities everywhere must fight for a livable and accessible world. Find ways to plug in and organizations to support on the last three slides.

Trans justice and disability justice are one fight across the world, for so many reasons. Our latest piece in Disability Culture Currents is “In Search of Trans Identity and Community in Cairo,” by Amara Refaat (he/her) @amaraya___, an anthropologist and writer in Egypt. In the essay, Amara explores his Trans and intersex community in Cairo, and the process by which her community gains safety through legal ID — which requires registering at a psychiatric hospital. From Amara: “It was clear that, regardless of our actual psychiatric backgrounds, the insistence on labeling transness as an illness rendered us all ‘insane’ in the eyes of the state, and therefore society.” But that rendering also brings legal ID, financial security, community, and so much more.
