Celebrating five years of partnership between Music Week and @girlsirate 💫 In 2020, we came together for a landmark takeover curated by Carla Marie Williams MBE (@carlamarieuk) on the cover, creating space for conversations, visibility tips and real change within the music industry.

That moment went on to spark Mentor Me, a platform that has since delivered 60 curated articles featuring insights, advice and lived experiences from some of the industry’s most influential executives, creatives and change-makers.

“I wish I’d had it when I started out,” @spotify’s @iamsafiya reflects alongside other participants in the new issue of Music Week — out now. “A huge thank you to Carla for the support she’s given not only to women coming into the industry, but also to those of us that she’s uplifted through community and friendship.”

Music Week’s editor-in-chief Geroge Garner says: “We believe that creating platforms like this is essential, because too many women still go unseen, unheard and unsupported across the industry.”

And, as Carla Marie concludes, “This is about progress, not gatekeeping.”

Here’s to five years of collaboration, community and continuing to open doors for women in music.

With their huge headline show at Finsbury Park fast approaching, we meet the band’s inimitable leader Serge Pizzorno, plus co-manager John Coyne and @columbiauk president @dparmar031, for a conversation that traces two decades in rock, overcoming adversity and why, in 2026, music “has to be wild, otherwise, who cares?”

In our new issue, @pizza_rhea, holds court on her journey through the industry, which has led to heading up West Coast A&R at @rxsongs and managing hitmaker @iamstephjones.

“Getting women of all different backgrounds in the studio together is just so powerful,” Pasricha Kullas told us. “It’s really important to keep amplifying those voices and making sure that they’re heard. When I was growing up, there wasn’t really an Indian woman in music that I could point to and be like, ‘Yes, that’s who I want to be.’ I’m not saying it needs to be me, but I would love to see more forward-facing people in music – as artists, writers, producers and creatives – being able to be that shining light for a little girl in Michigan wanting to get into music.”

The exec also launched a fierce defence of songwriters’ rights.

“All songwriters have to live off of is their publishing share,” she said. “They don’t have any other revenue source. I’m super, hyper-protective of that. Every which way, I think they’re getting the short end of the stick, and it’s just not fair. And, quite frankly, this industry is nothing without songs.”

“Artist management is one of the hardest areas of the music industry,” declares Chris Dempsey in a brand new and exclusive interview with Music Week. “We’re expected to be everything from chief strategist to amateur psychologist and everything in between. There’s a greater reliance on us to do A&R, marketing, to execute and strategise in areas that traditionally five or 10 years ago record labels would have taken the lead in.”

Dempsey, founder of @corduroyartists, relishes the workload.

“I’ve absolutely loved it,” he told us. “The past year has been unbelievable. I’m really proud of the roster we’ve built – it’s come [together] really naturally. I didn’t set my stall out to build a roster in an aggressive way; I was really happy setting up with Take That and Katherine Jenkins and then we quickly added Gracie Friel, Gabriella Cilmi, Somebody’s Child, Amy Sergeant… It’s been a really natural flow.”

As he prepares to release his debut album @mylessmithuk speaks to us in a brand new cover story about his friendship with @edsheeran and the sage advice the superstar has given him. Smith recalls Sheeran’s guidance about resisting the pressure to chase hit after hit: “He said, ‘Don’t sweat it – if you were an artist that was going song to song, then I can see why you’re putting this pressure on yourself, but you’re building a career.”

“He said, ‘You’re going to have low moments and moments that peak, and you just have to take all of them in your stride,’” Smith recounts. “For me, it’s about, ‘Am I content in what I’m doing, am I being authentic and honest with myself, and am I making myself proud?’” Smith says his and Sheeran’s attitude to life is similar, and Sheeran tells him that he reminds him a lot of himself. “We’ve clicked because we connect as human beings, not as musicians,” Smith adds, putting his finger on why they’ve bonded so well.

Read the full feature — where Smith is joined by @teamextendedplay’s Eric Parker. @closerartists@lofthouse1982, @rcalabelgroupuk’s @glynaikins & @joe_iddison and @wme’s @craigdsouzaagent — to get the lowdown on backing a star like Smith, in print and online now!

It’s been “super difficult”, says @mylessmithuk in our brand new cover story, to deal with the idea that the music he makes isn’t of Black origin. The British singer-songwriter was honoured when his hit, Nice To Meet You, was nominated for Song Of The Year at this year’s @moboawards .

“To get that recognition from a Black institution was a really nice tap on the shoulder, to be like, ‘You’re being seen and what you’re doing is incredible.’ That, for me, was super important,” continues Smith. He wishes there were more accessible routes into the music industry for people “who look like me and sound like me”.

Without his friends pushing him to keep going, or meeting his @teamextendedplay management, he thinks he wouldn’t have made it.

Read the full feature – in which we hear from Extended Play’s Eric Parker and Smith’s expanded management with @closerartists@lofthouse1982, as well as warm words from @rcalabelgroupuk’s @glynaikins & @joe_iddison and @wme’s @craigdsouzaagent about how they’re backing Smith all the way – in print and online now!

Instagram Stories geheim ansehen
