This past summer, Eve Lyons @lyonse invited me to be a part of her new special project, “Where We Are” a @nytimes series about young people coming of age and the spaces where they create community.

For many young people, their first car grants them a freedom to explore their city on an intimate level, with their windows down and music blasting - and away from the prying eyes of parents. Since 2018, I’ve watched my mother survive her divorce, raise my sister and care for her aging father, all while working as a preschool teacher, a high school teacher and a non-emergency ambulance driver. I’ve seen her chauffeur my sister and her friends around to no end, bring her father home cooked dinners most nights of the week and continue her animal rescuing.
