“The First Car” for The New York Times

This past summer, Eve Lyons @lyonse invited me to be a part of her new special project, “Where We Are” a @nytimes series about young people coming of age and the spaces where they create community.

Remy Tumin @remytumin who interviewed my friends and I over the fall, writes: The ability to get behind the wheel of a car for the first time, and go anywhere, is a distinct American rite of passage. For many young people, their first car grants them a freedom to explore their city on an intimate level, with their windows down and music blasting - and away from the prying eyes of parents. It can be a means to escape monotony and fear — especially during the height of the pandemic — and a gathering space where they can let it all go.

Huge thanks to Eve for bringing this work to life. Thank you to my beautiful friends and the city itself - without whom, there would be no pictures.

“For the past five years, I’ve photographed my immediate family in and around New Paris, a small town in rural Ohio. Beginning as a teenager, I found refuge in the camera’s ability to reveal the value of my own life to myself.

Since 2018, I’ve watched my mother survive her divorce, raise my sister and care for her aging father, all while working as a preschool teacher, a high school teacher and a non-emergency ambulance driver. I’ve seen her chauffeur my sister and her friends around to no end, bring her father home cooked dinners most nights of the week and continue her animal rescuing.

Without the camera, these experiences would be abstract, confined to words and bound to memory. With the camera, feeling is factualized, contained in a frame and packed with ruach which guides my everyday.” - @advli

Instagram Stories geheim ansehen
