I started making Instagram filters in 2019. It was fun to see all the puppy tongues, zombie faces, and cutesy heart vibes, but I wanted a set of tools I could use to make captivating content quickly. So that’s what I did! I recreated some of my go-to techniques from After Effects as Instagram Camera Effects.

“Frank” (fka “Horndog”)

A hot dog, a mustard bottle, a mobile device that I found on the street in NYC, a hobby motor, some 3d printed components, and custom website called “Instagrain” that generates a new image of bread on every scroll.

I started making this goofy thing on a whim and obsessed over it for several months after that. Started with developing the website from scratch, ended up learning how to make an entire back-end for web-based image generation app. The physical portion of the project took about six iterations, starting with a thrifted hobby science kit that I hacked, and resulting in the form you see before you.

I’m pleased with the result. So much so, in fact, that I put together an entire pop-up group art show just to show this to people IRL. More on that in a later post. Until then, enjoy watching this glizzy get dizzy.

(These recordings have been modified to loop seamlessly/indefinitely to simulate the experience of viewing the piece in person.)
