The CIA have released footage of UFO’s it’s all ballocks. If people came from outta space they would see our planet and run a mile, unless they came to see one of my solo shows. Last two nights supporting Bruce Foxton who is a loveley chap. 40 minutes of song tales. Melvin, Andy Caine and I completely in step. It was good to be back in the saddle up in posh Sloane Square where you can smell the money on the street. Our audience down to earth people who love a song some nostalgia and a pint. I felt at home on stage as the set whistled by, 40 minutes goes so quickly. Next up Southend and the start of the Christopher Cross tour I can’t wait to meet the man himself and play the songs that make me who I am to his wonderful audience. Come early or you will miss the UFO of my own making. The picture above is called ‘The Dressing Room Chair’ it’s taken by Jill Furmanovskywho has documented Squeeze and my life forever. She is kind and creative, thank you Jill. It’s also the title of my new book coming out early next year, but that’s another story for another day.

Well I never. Adam and his Ants plus Haircut 100 on tour with us this summer in America. That’s some line up, I can’t wait but what should I wear? Knee high boots or a jumper, perhaps a suit from Gresham Blake in Brighton. It’s a long time away from home, many sleepless nights on a tour bus many sound checks in E, more dressing room chairs. Squeeze have toured in the states since 1978 it’s always a thrill to play those stages where life revolves ever on, the hunt for a good bar now replaced by the hunt for a good coffee shop. Our show will be based around our album Trixies our pose serious until the hits fly in like bees around a jar of honey. I’m there already in my head but first a summer of solo support slots the early bath of performing. Next week see me waddle on with Christopher Cross and then in June see me saunter with my old friend Elvis Costello, both tours big moments for me so get there early. Beyond all of that there is Nashville and beyond, Adam and the Haircuts plus one hundred ants. Bums on seats please as I find home on a thousand dressing room chairs. @greshamblake @haircutonehundred

Life is often a bowl of cherries and sometimes it’s not, I’m used to the swings and the roundabouts that’s part of the revolving door of life. I had a good time singing tonight with the Derek Nash and his band in Southwold, a place for incredible fish and chips. The Arts Centre a perfectlywell run venue. It was challenging getting in the car again today, a very long drive for this old chap. A great band to sing with consisting of George Double on drums, Geoff Gascoyne bass and Chris Ingham Keys, making it all worth while. The cherry on this cakefor me was singing the songs I wrote with Guy Barker 20 years ago, incredible melodies and words I’m proud of. The sold out audience allowed me the space to try them out. Then the long drive into the night and the exhaustion of journey. It’s the swings it’s the roundabouts. In the car I find the space I need to refresh my thoughts to drift into the place where I reflect on my reflection as I see it from within. It’s my space alone it’s where the journey contains hope. My inner voice is soft and gentle it’s a word puzzle with a backdrop of classical music and today mostly nocturnes. And then it was now which it always is, passing ever so quickly but still the now. A roast a Sunday the day before more roundabout more swing more now.

When I was a confused teenager I had a tropical fish tank in my tiny bedroom I thought it might impress the girls, what girls. On the bus from the pet shop in Welling South London I would bring back the Angel fish Neon Tetras and Guppies in little bags on the bus, there they were confused in polythene. In the fish tank a green rock along with sunken bits of a toy ship, and fish that eat droppings. It’s a shit job. I once cleaned out the fish tank with a rag pushing the light fitting in with my fingers, I flew across the room with an electric shock. I soon moved on to my record player and my album collection grew and I was much happier. My world opened up and here I am a fish out of water in many respects. These wonderful pictures show my Grandchildren in various aquariums, I’m so happy to see these images of Nat with Gabriel and Riley with Brigid, the wonder of movement the beauty of the fish slowly going about their day, like me coming home tonight on a train from London where I have been talking about ‘Honey’ the musical , its a good distance from the stage but still a project close to my heart. The train is full of people talking on phones I would rather be a fish in a tank listening to records in my tiny bedroom millions of years ago with my parents downstairs who also kept tropical fish.@lifeofrileydifford @natdifford

Another week in Somerset comes to an end gentle close, the songwriters have given their all and the songs have been beautiful deep and sometimes funny, it’s exactly what a songwriters week should be. It’s been emotional too as people opened up giving their soul to the bridge that joins us across a river of inspiration . The good weather has provided the outdoors of life and the Help Musicians people have supported all 15 songwriters on this journey. This is a week that fills me with joy I look forward to it all year round and when I’m stuck on a train in Germany on route to another stage I visualise theatmosphere of this week and I feel lifted, back in the cradle of shared ambitions in a house that provides more than just a space to write. Pennard House, The Brill Building of Somerset, has given us the roof and love to inspire so many great songs I wish you could hear them like I do, it’s a gift. Thank you everyone who came to the song, thank you Pennard House and Help Musicians thank you Mother Nature for the beauty that surrounds us. I feel very lucky to be able to share my stories with strangers who become friends.@helpmusicians @pennardhouse

Through these doors over the past 14 years some incredible songwriters have arrived to enjoy the inspiration of Pennard House. Today I greeted 15 Help Musician writers chomping at the bit to have a good time. Guitars keyboards fill the hallway as another retreat begins. Thank you Help Musicians charity for making this happen, a treat for one and all. Thank you Pennard House for making us all so very welcome. The sun shines on the nature that embraces our lives, the calm of Somerset like a blanket on the ground, pencils at the ready. So many great songs have been composed here and I’m sure many more will follow this coming week, every year I walk through these doors I know another bunch of strangers will become good friends. @pennardhouse @helpmusicians

I’m out on the big stages soon supporting the delightful Christopher Cross, a treat to be back on the dressing room chair on his UK dates. My album ‘50 Years’ is full of hidden gems and some of these I will be performing on this tour. I’m proud of my album and the songs therein. These days it’s tough to get your music heard but if you come to the show early enough you will hear a few plus a sprinkle of hits from the past. My life in and out of Squeeze has been well documented recently so there is little to add other than to say one without the other is like salt without the pepper. All of my solo summer shows are on my website so if you see one you fancy then I will see you there, short strums of about 45 minutes just enough temptation before the main coarse, I’m like the Onion Bhaji of the evening meal. Tuck in.

My flying phobia is the rod that has made my own back, it’s always held me still and made me incredibly difficult to be around. Deep inside there must be a key that will unlock the fear. I have good friends who are pilots who help me with maps and words of wisdom, I’m lucky. Louise try’s hard to look after me too, I’m sorry for her as it must be hard work. Calm at 30,000 feet is a good book to read if you suffer like I do, Captain Chris is a kind person who loves flying with a passion, read his book and feel the help there. Chris writes about turbulence that the plane is inside a mold of jelly safe as it wobbles through the air, he writes much more too. A good image and we love jelly. The stress of flying folds me, it’s been this way all of my working life, so what can I do. London to New York 7 hours 29 minutes in a beautiful plane a big seat and two Tom’s at the sharp end. One of the Tom’s a drummer in a band, what a chap. I remember Freddie Laker in 1976 my first long haul flight across the pond, my fear was young possible absorbed by warm beer fags and cheese sandwiches. We were off to New York to play shows and tour America, but this time I’m off to see the Grandchildren. Our flight was smooth and we arrived on time. Home now a week later, it took 6 hours 15 minutes. I read the book again, I was emotionally tied to the passionate writing. It’s a good read for people like me, thanks Chris for taking the time to put the book together. The World can be a smaller place one chapter at a time. @captainchris

Instagram Stories geheim ansehen
