When Churchill met Einstein

In September 1933, at Chartwell, Churchill’s country estate in Kent, Churchill and Einstein met to talk about the increasing danger posed by Nazi Germany. Einstein had recently left Germany and was hoping to help Jewish academics and intellectuals who had been displaced.

Clay collaborated with the IWM and model makers Unusual Projects to bring to life three key moments from this historic meeting. Designing and animating custom 3D models and historically accurate physical room sets to create Pepper’s Ghost animations, which are integrated into a scale model of Chartwell House.

Ever wondered how your brain drives behaviour?
Clay has designed five interactive vitrines along the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre in London, each display tackles big questions like:
🧠 What is intelligence?
📚 How do you learn?
💤 Why do you sleep?
🤔 How do you make decisions?
With interactive activities, dynamic lighting, and real research objects, these ‘digital windows’ offer a glimpse inside the groundbreaking work happening at SWC.
Next time you’re in Fitzrovia, stop by and engage your curiosity!

For the @britishlibrary 's 'Medieval Women: In Their Own Words' exhibition, we developed a technique to represent the women featured in the exhibition.

We overlaid silhouettes with details from brass rubbings and printed them life-size on translucent fabric to create these ethereal suggestive figures, that you encounter throughout the exhibition. Some of them come to life as projection. Printed quotes and their words in audio accompany these figures.

At the end of the exhibition journey, they come together as a symphony of voices.

The exhibition is still open until 2nd March 2025

The Tudor World In The Wolsey Rooms: Ordinary Lives In Extraordinary Times
July 2024

Situated in the oldest rooms at Hampton Court Palace this exhibition tells the story of the ordinary men and women who enabled the Tudor court to exist and flourish.

Clay designed and produced a series of animations and interactive displays that provide insight into the Tudor World within the broader context of the 16th century.

The centrepiece is an immersive experience showcasing two Tudor History paintings. Brought to life through animated projection mapping and dynamic sound design, creating a vivid glimpse into the grand celebrations hosted by Henry VIII and Francis I.

Technicians gallery opened at Science Museum London in November 2022. A free and highly interactive space is designed to inspire young people to discover their own skills and explore the impact they could have as technicians.

Clay created a number of exhibits, including two interactive experiences that allow visitors to step behind the scenes and into post-production roles at Marvel Studios, working on the hit film Black Panther. The visual effects station enables visitors to composite multiple layers of footage and add effects, while the sound effects station allows them to craft an authentic soundtrack for a dramatic fight sequence.

In collaboration with The Gatsby Foundation, Clay designed a series of vibrant and dynamic terminals, inviting visitors to engage in a careers quiz. This quiz helps them identify personal strengths and interests, with the results highlighting crucial yet often overlooked technical careers. Upon completing the quiz, visitors choose a role, contributing to an evolving team displayed prominently at the heart of the gallery.

Fantasy: Realms of Imagination ran from October 2023 to February 2024 at the British Library

This enchanting exhibition explored the beautiful, uncanny, and sometimes monstrous makings of fantasy.

During its development, we took the opportunity to experiment with new tools.

The woodland animation was animated and rendered in Unreal Engine.
The split scan room was developed using TouchDesigner.

Centre of the Cell
Queen Mary University of London

Originally designed by Land Design Studio in 2011, the Centre for the Cell experience at Queen Mary University is a ground-breaking STEM educational resource housed within a spectacular suspended pod, designed by Alsop Architects.

The Founder and Director of this project, Professor Fran Balkwill, has been involved since the initial commissioning of the Centre for the Cell which was the first science education centre in the world to be located within working biomedical research laboratories.

Having come to end of life, the experience has been upgraded with new state-of-the-art hardware, media, and digital interactivity. Clay had the opportunity to reimagine the films and animation, while preserving the most effective aspects.

Centre of the Cell’s 13 years of hands-on experience proved invaluable in steering the project. Existing films were remade featuring cutting-edge science and a new projection-mapped sequence, generously supported by LifeArc, guides visitors on a captivating journey through the ‘orchestra’ of human body.

Impressing tech-savvy children and tweens can be quite a challenge, but STEM Pod 2023 is both thrilling and educational, making it a truly remarkable experience.

Clay created a series hand drawn animations and an interactive quiz for this must-see exhibition which tells the story of deception and espionage from the First World War to the present day.

A tear-gas firing pen, lipstick camera, secret pencil and covert radio were all bought to life with revealing animated sequences and playful sound design. The animation style was inspired by vintage cinema and period patent illustrations, giving the animations a nostalgic feel reminiscent of World War II and the Cold War era.

The Deep Fakes interactive exhibit challenges participants to find a deep fake portrait from a lineup of individuals, offering insights into the limitations of AI-generated photos. Visitors analyse subtle cues that reveal the fakes, and then face the unique task of identifying the authentic person in a crowd of deep fakes. The exhibit concludes with a video that sheds light on the growing role of deepfakes in contemporary espionage.

"a fascinating look at the tricks, and dangers, of espionage"
★★★★★ The Telegraph

"a whole century of espionage, misdirection, subterfuge, camouflage, double-dealing and just about anything that has been used to gain an advantage"
★★★★ Evening Standard
