A bedrock fallacy underpinning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since its inception is that it’s inherently ideologically incompatible to be both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian. That reductive mindset has dominated the discourse to the detriment of healthy debate and conflict resolution.

A better future begins by disabusing ourselves of that notion. Because a precondition for peace is accepting the other’s humanity.

With ceasefire in place, I wrote about Iran, and the war, through the eyes of Iranian Jews—mine and my family’s in particular. I talk about my mom’s longing to go back, and the shadow of my grandfather, the former Jewish member of Parliament in pre-Revolution Iran. It’s a personal, albeit familiar, immigrant and Jewish exile story.

Several months ago I set out to create something that I found missing: an event that spotlighted the history, culture, and cuisine of Iranian Jews. The story of Ashkenazis is one well-told and often studied. The same cannot be said about Jews from the Middle East and North Africa. We’re hardly represented, and if ever in a positive light.

Everyone knows about Iran, especially with the revolution that’s taking place. But it’s safe to assume that peoples’ knowledge of Iran is limited to a story of conflict and extremism. So it was important to me that the Iranian Jews’ story, and Iran, be written and told the right way. That’s why we came together. To tell that story.

I want to thank the organizations that sponsored this event and made it possible: @israelpolicyforum, @progressivezionists, @jimena_voice, and @30yearsafter. I also want to thank the incredible @nicoleskitchenla for feeding and hosting us. Last but not least, I want to thank the one and only @houman.sarshar, for telling our story the way nobody else can.

I had the ridiculous privilege of being interviewed by my sister @tiffanymaj for @beverlyhillsweekly. I talked about being a California Democratic Party Delegate, my path to politics, and now my role as campaign manager for @rob4controller. Check it out at bhweekly.com.

Instagram Stories geheim ansehen
