ノミネート者としてアカデミー賞に参加したという経験を具現化するのにだいぶ時間がかかりました。想像を超える応援とお祝いの言葉に心から感謝しています！そして、このノミネートにより自分がやってきたことにに寄せられた関心、注目、サポートを、とてもありがたく感じています。

母が、私が高校を卒業したときに両親にあげたサイン入りの写真を送ってくれました。それは、大学巡り中にハリウッド・ウォーク・オブ・フェイムにいる私で、「有名になるから見てて！」という言葉が書かれています(この前投稿)。正直有名になりたいという願望は覚えていませんが、私が言いたかったのは、影響を与えたいということだったと思います。そして、人々に関心を持ってもらうには、ある程度「有名」であることが条件の一部だと感じていたのだと思います。今、これまで以上に、自分の言葉、選択、仕事がもたらす責任を感じています。

「小学校〜それは小さな社会〜」プロジェクトは自分のこれまで１０ 年の集大成です。この映画が、私たちが教育システムに何を求めているかを考えるツールとして役立つことを願っています。そして私たち一人ひとりが、教育に関心を持ち続け、次世代を育てるために懸命に働いている教員をはじめ教育現場の皆さんたちをどのようにサポートできるか一緒に考えていけたらと思います。

アカデミー賞授賞式自体については、これらの映画の製作に協力してくれた多くの人と一緒に祝えたことが何よりも嬉しかったです。この瞬間にたどり着くまで、うまくいかないことも多々あり、自分に自信を失っていた瞬間がたくさんありました。映画製作はとても難しいので、一緒にやってくれる仲間がいなければできません。この冒険を共にしたエリックと、私のモチベーションの源である息子に特別な感謝を。いつか、一緒にいれなかった時間、ママとパパが何をしていたのか理解してくれることを願っています。

今後も、 社会に影響を与えることを願いながら、「無関心を減らす」「人間の人間的なところを理解する」「何かに気づく」などの言葉を軸に置いての作品制作を目指します。そして自分独自の道を切り開いていきたいと思っています。また、日本国内のドキュメンタリー映画製作者の強力なコミュニティの構築に貢献し、ドキュメンタリーがさらに多くの人々に観られるものになる方法を見つけたいと思っています。

It’s taken many days to process what it meant to attend the Oscars as an Academy Award Nominee. I have been overwhelmed by all the support and truly appreciate all the well wishes! I cannot be more grateful for the interest, attention, and support it has brought to my work.

My mother sent me a signed photo I gave my parents when I graduated high school - it’s me at the Hollywood Walk of Fame (which I visited when checking out various film schools in California), with the written words “Wait ‘Til I’m Famous!”. Honestly I don’t remember my desire to be famous, but I think what I meant was I want to make an impact, and I knew being “known” was part of the equation for people to care. More than ever before I am feeling the responsibility my words, choices, and work carries.

The films INSTRUMENTS OF A BEATING HEART and THE MAKING OF A JAPANESE are the culmination of my past decade. I hope the films have served as tools to think about what we want from our education system. I hope each of us can think of how we can support our teachers who are doing the hard work to raise the next generation.

As for the Oscars itself, I’m so glad many of those who helped me make these films could celebrate with me so I could celebrate them. There were many moments of darkness and self-doubt before arriving at this moment. Filmmaking is so hard, I can’t do it unless I have a fantastic team to do it with. Special shout outs to Eric Nyari, who I share this adventure with, and our son, my source of motivation who I hope one day will understand what Mama and Papa were doing when away.

What to do now? I will continue making films that strive to evoke empathy and understanding, with the hope it has an impact on society. I hope to continue paving my own unique path.I’d also like to help build a strong community of documentary filmmakers in Japan, and find ways for documentaries to become something even more people watch.

Onward. This is just the beginning.

15年前に学生として訪れたカンヌ映画祭(写真2枚目)。いつかまた来るぞ！と誓った記憶が。ドキュメンタリーの道に行ってあまり縁がないかなと思っていたけど、カンヌドックスのドキュメンタリーデイのスピーカーとして戻って来れてとても嬉しかったです。

It was also exciting to represent @jdocshub - a new initiative for Japanese documentaries. We have some funds to incubate and foster filmmakers and projects, and it’ll be an exciting few years ahead. @ddddfilmschool - the tokyo documentary school that my colleagues and I started last year - is also being supported by this initiative. Watch out for an influx in Japanese projects coming your way 👀

15年前に学生として訪れたカンヌ映画祭(写真2枚目)。いつかまた来るぞ！と誓った記憶が。ドキュメンタリーの道に行ってあまり縁がないかなと思っていたけど、カンヌドックスのドキュメンタリーデイのスピーカーとして戻って来れてとても嬉しかったです。

It was also exciting to represent @jdocshub - a new initiative for Japanese documentaries. We have some funds to incubate and foster filmmakers and projects, and it’ll be an exciting few years ahead. @ddddfilmschool - the tokyo documentary school that my colleagues and I started last year - is also being supported by this initiative. Watch out for an influx in Japanese projects coming your way 👀

Well here I was participating in @cannes.docs and @marchedufilm — thank you for having me as a keynote speaker on Doc Day!
Yes I titled my talk “The Edit IS the Film” - one for the editors out there!

糸井重里さんもドキュメンタリー公開されるやいなやすぐ観に行ったそうで、トークイベントにもいらしてくださっていた。

「当たり前」って、こんなに特別だったんだと。
日本の小学校って、小さな“日本社会”だったんだと気付かされました。

本も、ほんとうに良くて刺さります。
