EVEWRIGHT
EVEWRIGHT, a multi-disciplinary visual installation artist, challenges public environments to make spaces for Black British stories.
As a Black Artist researching Zong and Africa, I’m interested in how art holds history.
Work by EVEWRIGHT at Greenwich Maritime Museum. This video is a teaser to their Q&A with Michael I. Ohajuru

Exhibition: UNBROKEN
Evewright Arts curated: Unbroken, a banner art and sound installation on display in Ocean Court, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich from 29th November 2025 to 16th February 2026
The art installation Unbroken uses Naval military uniforms and the African currency £££ Kissi Penny $$$ as visual symbols to ask profound questions about who holds power, what has value, and how the official systems and institutions of the past (like the Navy) were instrumental in a crime against humanity, framing this critique through the lens of maritime history and the ocean’s role in global injustice.
Unbroken installation is available for commission. For curatorial and artwork enquires please contact us at hello@evewrightstudio.com Evewright Arts mission is to create new and exciting relevant contemporary Black British stories to engage the global majority and wider communities.
OCEAN JUSTICE RESIDENCY
In June 2025 the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, opened Ocean Court. This redevelopment transformed the heart of the Museum into a dynamic, vibrant space for visitors to explore knowledge and understanding of the marine environment and reflect on our cultural and spiritual relationship with the ocean.
Evewright Arts undertook a five-month residency across the sites of Royal Museums Greenwich to explore and respond to the theme of ‘Ocean Justice’. They researched collection objects and archives, held a dialogue with staff and visitors and reflected on the Museum’s location, history and purpose. Unbroken, an art installation of 16 large-scale banners spanning Ocean Court, was created as an
outcome of the research journey experienced by artist EVEWRIGHT and writer and poet Ionie Richards. This powerful installation embodies the complex stories that can be told through museum objects and archives; centring human resilience and honouring ancestors in this creative response to the tragic events on board the British slave ship Zong.

Unbroken, an art installation of 16 large-scale banners spanning Ocean Court, was created as an outcome of the research journey experienced by artist EVEWRIGHT and writer and poet Ionie Richards. At the end of the class, there will be an opportunity to share your work – and get valuable feedback – in a supportive ‘show and tell’ session. All materials are provided, and all skill levels are welcome. Please note that models will be nude.

A fantastic evening out with Everton Wright - EVEWRIGHT - at his Unbroken show at the National Maritime Museum.
In Unbroken, EVEWRIGHT reimagines the Museum’s naval uniforms alongside a previous sculptural series, £££ Kissi Penny $$$, named in reference to an iron currency used during the trade of enslaved people in West Africa.
He explores the theme of Ocean Justice to create an artwork of potent juxtaposition that exposes the intersection of value, humanity and institutional complicity in the transatlantic trade of enslaved African people.
Thank you for a wonderful evening.

In Unbroken, EVEWRIGHT reimagines the Museum’s naval uniforms alongside a previous sculptural series, £££ Kissi Penny $$$, named in reference to an iron currency used during the trade of enslaved people in West Africa. The artist explores the theme of Ocean Justice to create an artwork of potent juxtaposition that exposes the intersection of value, humanity and institutional complicity in the transatlantic trade of enslaved African people.

OCEAN JUSTICE
Evewright Arts
Residency at the National Maritime
Museum Greenwich
1st July - 30th November 2025
EVEWRIGHT ‘Explodes’ buttons on drawings he make of uniforms worn by Admiral Nelson to create ‘£££ Kissi Pennies $$$’
Film: @evewrightstudio. Artist EVEWRIGHT in residence at the Royal Maritime Museum ‘The studio’. Evewright Studio all rights reserved 2025.
Evewright Arts is delighted to lead a five-month residency at the National Maritime Museum exploring the theme of Ocean Justice with a focus on new research, development, shaping dynamic and engaging visitor experiences.
The residency will be an exciting opportunity to research the Royal Museums Greenwich collection and archive to inspire and explore new ideas, practice, create new dialogue and interpretations.
Evewright Arts founders artist EVEWRIGHT and Ionie Richards will both be able to develop their individual practice. EVEWRIGHT, who uses art and a multidisciplinary approach, and Ionie Richards, exploring writing and research, will begin their new residency at The Studio from July to November.
“The unveiling of the reimagined Ocean Court marks an exciting artistic and intellectual chapter within the museum’s ongoing story. For us, the powerful concept of Ocean Justice serves as a profound wellspring for our individual creative explorations, each delving into the intricate and often turbulent relationship between humanity and the vast ocean. This pivotal moment will deeply inform our artistic inquiries into the world around us, with the ever-present narrative of migration at its heart. We bring our distinct histories and perspectives to this space, eager to contribute to a vibrant public dialogue that considers our shared past, navigates our present, and shapes our collective future.”

LAST WEEKEND at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2025
£££ Kissi Penny $$$ In these works, EVEWRIGHT subverts notions of worth and value imposed by the transatlantic slave trade and colonial subjugation. £££ Kissi Pennies $$$, 2023, is a series of sculptures and a conceptual currency whose title originates from the Kissi Penny, a West African currency which took the form of a thin iron bar flattened on one end with spiked splayed-out prongs on the other. £££ Kissi Pennies $$$ were historically traded among the Gbandi, Kissi and Mandinka peoples, among others situated around the West African Atlantic coast. Alongside this status, Kissi Pennies were also used to adorn burial sites and thus gained religious connotations.
These sculptures or, as the artist calls them, ‘coins’ confront the notion of currency, and worth in relation to the value of human life and modern-day migration. As each £££ Kissi Penny $$$ artwork is sold, a fresh financial transaction takes place, releasing ‘THE COINS WITH SOUL’, an ancestor to be set free with hope by the artist.
