Join us on Saturday, May 30th at 2pm, at the May Chapel in Rosehill Cemetery to celebrate Mars Williams’s birthday (b. May 29th, 1955)!

Dave Rempis, Ken Vandermark and I will debut the “Horns From Mars,” a piece featuring the current players of horns that Mars played throughout his life. In this iteration that means Ken will be playing Mars’s Hungarian taragato and the Bb Clarinet Mars grew up playing, joined by Dave and I on Mars’s pair of 1920s Martin soprano saxophones. Around this time last year, Dave was putting the notion of soprano playing into my head, and not long thereafter introduced me to this horn. It’s meant a lot to play something of Mars’s and to take his influence as inspiration to broaden my palette in horns and approaches to playing. It is doubly fun that it is an almost identical piece to the one the Dave plays (his being silver, mine brass) and exists in an artistic milieu where it will surely rub shoulders or share stages with its cousins from Mars’s inventory on many occasions besides this one.

For the second set,Rin Peisert - a Chicago-based performance artist and dear friend of Mars - will work alongside her frequent collaborator David Hurlin to activate Mars’ massive collection of musical toys which are currently housed as part of the Mars Williams Archive at Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago. This will be the latest incarnation of Mars Williams Toy Story!
