The Society for Music Theory has announced the results of its 2026 elections, and we are delighted to share that Orit Hilewicz has been elected to the SMT Executive Board as a Member-At-Large! Professor Hilewicz's election to the Executive Board recognizes her contributions to the field and her commitment to the broader music theory community. As a Member-At-Large, she will help guide the Society’s initiatives and support its mission to advance research, pedagogy, and engagement in music theory. Congratulations, Professor Hilewicz! 🎉

From the opera stage to a new faculty appointment, Caio Lopes is having an incredible year! The DM Choral Conducting student recently hit two massive milestones:
- Served as Assistant Chorus Master for The Atlanta Opera’s production of Götterdämmerung, working alongside Professor Emeritus Walter Huff AND
- Accepted the position of Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Indianapolis!

Please join us in welcoming our new Visiting Lecturer in Composition (Electronic and Computer Music)—Oliver Kwapis! Effective August 1, Professor Kwapis will bring his extensive expertise in acoustic and electroacoustic music back to Jacobs for the 2026–27 year.
An alumnus of both Jacobs and Oberlin Conservatory, he's currently finishing his PhD at the University of Oregon. His work has been featured globally at festivals like ICMC and SEAMUS and performed by premier ensembles including the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
We are thrilled to welcome Professor Kwapis to the composition department! 🙌

Congratulations to Miranda Nilan, the recipient of this year’s Wilfred Bain Award in Opera! This honor is uniquely focused on one vital criterion: significant potential for a major professional career in opera.
Out of 31 talented applicants, @mirandanilan’s artistry stood out as a clear example of the next generation of opera stars. This award carries on the legacy of Dean Emeritus Wilfred Bain by supporting singers ready to take the global stage.

1 of 2 in the nation‼️ Huge congratulations to Anson Chan (M.M.'25, P.D.'26) on being named a 2026 Bowdoin Music Festival Fellow! Out of pianists nationwide, Anson was one of only two selected for this prestigious fellowship.
Currently studying under Chi Ho Han, @ansonchan121 just received his Performance Diploma and is diving into his D.M.A. at Jacobs this fall where he’ll also be minoring in historical keyboard. Congratulations, Anson!

We are very pleased to welcome David Murray as our newest Professor of Music in Trombone! Joining the JSOM faculty this August, Professor Murray brings a wealth of global experience from his tenure with the National Symphony Orchestra and the faculty of the Peabody Institute. Beyond his orchestral career, he has performed as a guest principal in Cologne and Kuala Lumpur and has shared his expertise through master classes at institutions like Eastman and Northwestern.
We are thrilled to have this “wonderful musician, marvelous teacher and terrific human being” join our Brass Department! Welcome to Jacobs, Professor Murray 🔴⚪️

These words from Margaret Harshaw set a young Patrick Summers on a path that led from Jacobs to the world’s greatest stages. With the Houston Grand Opera’s 2025–26 season coming to a close, we celebrate this JSOM alumnus as he concludes his extraordinary 27-year legacy as Artistic and Music Director!
A Washington, IN native, Maestro Summers' journey began at Jacobs at age 13 as a student of the legendary Menahem Pressler. Since then, he has become a global icon of the podium, leading over 20 world premieres and conducting at prestigious houses from the Met to Berlin.
As he transitions to Music Director Emeritus at HGO, we honor his storied career, his enduring ties to the MAC, and his commitment to mentoring the next generation of artists.
Congratulations on a historic tenure, Maestro! We look forward to seeing you back home in Indiana soon.

The IU Wind Ensemble is headed to the national stage! The ensemble and conductor Donald McKinney have been invited to perform at the 2027 CBDNA National Conference at the University of Maryland next Feburary. This invitation marks their first national appearance since 2015, a huge accomplishment for the group! 👏
