The last three years have been the hardest of my life so far. Lots of funerals. Lots of change. Somewhere along the way I wrote a book. It’s called BEFORE VIOLENCE, and it’s coming out with @carcanetpress in March (and it’s currently a @poetrybooksociety Spring Recommendation) 🌱🩵
My dad passed away last week after a long struggle with alcoholism. He’d been in a coma at the beginning of this year and again the Christmas before last. It’s strange. I’ve spent so long waiting for him to die. Throughout my life he died again and again but he always came back. And when he came back he told me none of it was my fault, that he loved me and was proud of me.
One of his friends described him yesterday as ‘beautiful and difficult’, and I think that’s perfect.
One of our last conversations was about the new pram he’d bought us. He’d saved £200 of his PIP to make sure Cillian had a winter pram with a rain cover.
Dad, I love you so much. I hope you know that. And I hope you can now, finally, rest.

I have a poem in the Spring issue of @thepoetrysociety.
The title is borrowed from the last line of Gboyega’s poem ‘A Potted History of East’, which is a poem I think about all the time, and a poem I wrote about for the latest issue of @magma__poetry.
Time is zooming at the moment. By the end of April it will be a year since we published the last issue of bath magg. I loved doing the magazine with Gboyega. It was such fun scheming… burrowing around… planning which big cheese poet to ask for a poem next. I remember a dream of ours was to publish a poem by Anne Carson. We got close a few times, emailing with her agent, but we could never afford her fee.
(I remember, and this was near the beginning, way before we got funding and could pay poets, Gboyega and I in a pub deciding whether or not it was a good idea to offer Anne Carson’s agent £100 of our own money for a poem 😂 We had no idea what we were doing!)
Soon it will be 2 years since Gboyega passed, 3 years since we got matching duck tattoos, 6 years since bath magg started.
I miss you bro 🩵
