As an educator in her own classrooms, a barometer of dance excellence in the Twin Cities, and a legacy performer recognized nationwide, Toni Pierce was an artist and mentor whose impact operated on every scale.
In my own dance journey, Toni introduced a level of physical rigor I had never experienced. She pushed my limits with precision and care, honoring the minutiae of Ailey’s Horton technique in a way that made the work feel both sacred and joyful.
Across our eight years together, she was an unwavering supporter of my queerness and a constant reminder to pursue excellence without apology. I was nowhere near the markings of her company members, but Toni’s leadership during my undergraduate years, paired with her warmth, humor, and friendship long after… became foundational to the artist I eventually became. Her influence didn’t just shape how I danced… it shaped how I moved through the world as a creative. RIP to a legend. This is terrible. It’s sucks.

A lil what I’ve been doing + what I’ve been watching and loving. Fight me on it.
“Lurker” 🎥 So good. This film… a perfect storm of hypnotic writing, razor-sharp performances, and unnerving stillness that makes you feel like you’re there.
“The Pitt” 🩼 This was a really fun watch. The 2nd half of the season will have you by the throat. Not prestige television by any means, but 100% entertaining and it was really fun when I cried like eight times.
“Rotting in the Sun” ☀️ Jordan Firstman is the kind of guy I would fight in the club, but I really loved this movie. It’s probably my favorite watch of the entire year. It twists. It turns. It’s sexy, It’s in Mexico City. It’s incredible.
“Gen V” 🤛 Both this show and “The Boys” are so visceral, so cool, and manage to be bravely political without being annoying. Must watch.
“Andor” 💫 A Star Wars show had no business being this good. It’s prestige! It’s emmy-worthy! How did they do that?!
“Wheapons” 🌙 Y’all already know. Such cool style, this movie. Felt very genre-colliding.
“Alien Earth” 👽 I was amazed at how they were able to elevate the brand, while honoring its roots. The last episode made me feel like I needed one more episode though.
