We honor the life and legacy of Sonny Rollins, legendary jazz tenor saxophonist whose artistry transformed jazz and inspired generations of musicians.
Across a remarkable seven-decade career, Rollins recorded more than 60 albums as a leader, creating compositions that became enduring jazz standards. Among his many honors were a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the preservation of his landmark 1956 album “Saxophone Colossus” in the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.
In 2013, Sonny Rollins was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Juilliard, pictured here.
All of us at Juilliard extend our condolences to his friends, family, and loved ones.

The Juilliard community mourns the passing of renowned music theorist and former faculty member Carl Schachter. A leading expert in Schenkerian analysis, a method of analyzing tonal music, Schachter taught at Juilliard for nearly 20 years and was honored with the William Schuman Scholar Award in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the musical community and to arts education in 2014.
Through his teaching and influential texts, he shaped generations of musicians and deepened the understanding of the relationship between music analysis and performance. We honor his legacy and extend our condolences to his family, students, and loved ones.

It is with great sadness that we recognize the passing of civil rights leader Dr. Clarence B. Jones. A professor, political advisor, lawyer, author, and speechwriter for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jones helped shape the historic “I Have a Dream” speech. Early in his life, he studied clarinet at Juilliard’s summer high school program before earning a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University. His lifelong commitment to justice, education, and the arts leaves an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire all that we do. We are deeply grateful to his extraordinary contributions and honored to have welcomed him into the Juilliard community.
On January 23, 2020, Juilliard President Damian Woetzel presented Dr. Jones with the President’s Medal as part of our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture. In a conversation with Juilliard students, faculty, and staff, Dr. Jones shared the remarks he wrote for Dr. King’s opening statement at the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival in Germany.
He will be greatly missed, and his memory will continue to be celebrated through the indelible impact of his work and words.
