Etching out space and finding your community in a new city can be daunting. For chef Deborah Ryan, the answer was found in food. Inviting fellow expats to come together and share recipes from dog-eared cookbooks, with each person bringing one dish to the table.
‘I wanted to replicate and share that feeling I get at home, so everyone could dish out their favourite recipes and feel like they’re part of something.’
Copenhagen Cookbook Club by Deborah Ryan features in Guzzle issue three.

Another inside the illustration for @guzzlemag, this one to accompany ‘Copenhagen Cookbook Club’ by @debzjryan. Here you can see some of the directions I explored but didn’t make the cut - glad to have gone with the direction we did!

Visited the highlands last August with @jprmoore and had a total blackout during Storm Floris, thank you to @daoinepottery for letting us decorate some of your gorgeous ceramics and play blindly with glazes, no idea what I was doing but love this little dancing garden 🦋

1 : Ideas are pretty loose when I start into it with Procreate, I know what feeling I’m trying to achieve and I just draw and erase until I get close to it! I work with tonal drawings to begin, a lesson taught during my course with @lauralannes last year, it really works for me. This is what I sent over to editor @janegleeson_ for approval!
2 : Once Jane gave the go-ahead, I printed my sketch and used a lightbox to paint each separate element in black gouache. I’d love to be able to work solely with paint, but this process of hand-done and digital is much quicker and more appropriate sometimes. I should have gotten some content of me painting, next time (maybe).
3 : Then I assemble in photoshop, this is the quick bit as I figured everything out in the tonal drawings. It’s just a bunch of layers and masks and I clean up and make some finishing touches. This is just another colour scheme that we considered earlier, but so glad it went in the direction it did in the final.
