David was a great man of letters. A master of his discipline, admired and cherished the world over for his poetry, fiction, opera, and memoir.

He was also a chronicler of our nation. A storyteller who captured and distilled our Australian spirit, collective memory and way of life into something pure.

Also a great Queenslander. A great Australian. He will be deeply missed.
