Earlier this month, I had the privilege of wearing an Erin Carignan original at the 25th annual Denver Derby Party. Erin is an associate professor of costume design in our @CSUSMTD — and a fantastic milliner. With credits on more than 200 productions, including work with Los Angeles Opera, the Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse and Curious Theatre, she is also the author of Dyeing for Entertainment from @RoutledgeBooks and is currently helping design a new dyeing studio at our University Center for the Arts.

The hat itself is made from gold horsehair shaped into the Ram horns, green taffeta ribbon Erin cut and pressed by hand, custom-cut feathers and a CSU emblem cut from gold vinyl. The finishing touch was a gold lapel pin set right between the gold Ram horns.

And at the Derby, there was nothing but praise for Erin’s work. Faculty like Erin make this university what it is. Erin, thank you for sharing your brilliance with not just me but the entire CSU community.

Cannot wait to find another reason to wear this masterpiece. Go Rams!

This week, we’re highlighting Elena Crooks, a third-year student and second-year Presidential Ambassador double majoring in Trombone Performance and Political Science. 🎶⚖️

From music studios and midterms to weekend dance nights, working at a local law firm and staying involved with Kappa Kappa Psi, Elena shows us what it can look like to stay engaged, passionate and connected within our community as a Ram. We’ll be seeing a lot more of Elena as she steps into her role next semester as the PA Marketing and Communications Chair.

Last week, I had the pleasure to join the Golden family, whose generous support of the arts continues to transform lives, for a special catered lunch at their home.

We were delighted to bring together Dr. Joel Bacon, holder of the Stewart and Sheron Golden Chair for Liturgical Organ Studies, and Reynaldi, a master’s student in music and recipient of the Golden Champion an Artist Scholarship, to personally thank the family whose generosity made their work possible.

The day became even more memorable with a special announcement: Dr. Bacon has been named a University Distinguished Professor — one of @coloradostateuniversity’s highest honors, recognizing extraordinary achievement in teaching, research, and service. A well‑deserved milestone, shared in the company of those who helped make it possible.

With music being an essential part of humanity, Maddie believes its the answer to a lot of problems students and people face in today’s world, wanting to pass the lessons she learns with the students she teaches.

Going through college where my friends and I pretend to be first graders for each other is fun, but being in front of students and seeing them laugh, sing, and make connections in real time is like a dream. A: The sheer amount of resources and opportunities that I have through CSU is astounding. Special shoutout to the Music Education department, I was in local classrooms teaching lessons during my first semester freshman year! I believe in order to be a better teacher, you need to just get out in the field and try things, so I am so grateful for CSU for giving me so many chances to do just that.

Q: What has been your favorite CSU experience?
A: My favorite experience at CSU was working for CSU SPUR Music Lab. If you haven’t checked out the SPUR campus yet, go check it out on the second Saturday of every month, there are so many free opportunities for education and fun. As a part of Music Lab, we give free lessons in voice, percussion, guitar, ukulele, piano, and many more instruments. We also partner with several community groups like Colorado Youth Mariachi Program, DCI Tour, and Mobile Studio, a professional recording studio on wheels! The thing I love about Music Lab is that all of our teaching comes through a culturally responsive and trauma-informed lens so that we can include every type of musicianship in our community.
