Every shot in ‘Fatherland,’ a concise black-and-white film by Paweł Pawlikowski, is perfectly lit. Here, as in his previous films ‘Cold War’ and ‘Ida,’ the Polish director illuminates the encroachment of post-war Soviet oppression in eerie-yet-beautiful monochrome.
Set in 1949, ‘Fatherland’ follows writer and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) as he returns to Germany, 16 years after he fled Nazi occupation, with his daughter, Erika (Sandra Hüller). Two films, both alike in sensuality, screened simultaneously at @festivaldecannes this week. Each depicted intense, life-altering affairs between women, but where ‘A Woman’s Life’ by Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet strove for realism, Jane Schoenbrun’s ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ went for surreal, balls-to-the-walls maximalism. Read our review online now at the link in bio.

The @festivaldecannes is well underway, and Mastermind is covering the action with reviews, interviews and reporting. First up, @elsspethh surveys the state of film criticism, speaks to veteran critics @davidehrlich and #Serge Kaganski about how the profession has changed and the future websites like @letterboxd represent. Responsible for some of fashion’s most unforgettable makeup moments, Pat McGrath has helped transform runways into high-octane beauty spectacles. The industry has changed enormously since she first began creating her bold, technically defiant looks, which are now endlessly referenced and recreated.
“What’s changed for the better is how beauty is shared and defined,” @patmcgrathreal tells @whatcaityfound. “And there’s more diversity now, more skin tones, more identities visible than when I started. What I miss a little is that private, exploratory feeling – testing and discovering backstage before everything was instantly documented. That sense of magic was special.”

Now that spring is rumbling to life, the season has come for long walks in blossoming nature. At the link in bio, British journalist and author of ‘Wonderlands: British Garden Designers at Home’ @clarecoulson shares her recommendations for where to sit under cherry blossom trees, observe bearded irises or bask in a meadow – and why the UK is so proud of its gardening heritage. Few artists can translate their emotions with such sincerity that their work becomes an impetus for change – a catalyst for cultural revolution. Yohji Yamamoto has this power: he subverts an industry’s notions of who women are and how they might dress, while waging a deeper battle for peace and diversity.
“I’ve been doing this job for more than 40 years,” @yohjiyamamotoofficial tells @raysanfourche in #Mastermind19. “I’ve been asking myself recently, ‘When are you going to finish your work?’ There’s no answer. Maybe when I die, or when I no longer understand how to cut, how to print, how to pick a color. As far as I know, I can never stop.” Order the new issue to read the full interview with #YohjiYamamoto.

In 2013, the philanthropist Maja Hoffmann established LUMA Arles, an institution designed by the late Frank Gehry that is now a global cultural powerhouse and a laboratory for artistic, scientific and ecological innovations. And it’s just one part of her far more ambitious vision, she tells Donatien Grau in #Mastermind19.
“LUMA’s project was based on the idea that art cannot change the world, but that society must take artists’ ways of thinking into account, and that artists are not there just to decorate. Artistic creation is one thing, but it’s creative thinking that interests me more,” she says.
