Our Commons – Food & Community Resilience brings together Labtanya (Indonesia) and New Practice (UK) through the British Council’s Connections Through Culture programme.

Launched in 2017, Our Commons has explored food and urban resilience in local communities, with earlier support from a 2021 British Council grant alongside Deveron Projects. In its 2025 edition, the project evolves into an immersive and educational board game—a tool to spark dialogue and action around community-led food resilience. Through a residency and collaboration, the project strengthens UK-Indonesia exchange while reimagining how communities can learn from each other and build sustainable food systems.

This November, we’ll be saying farewell to Marc Cairns who will be stepping down from his role at New Practice.

As co-founder of the practice, Marc has helped shape who we are over the past six years - from leading our early projects across Scotland and establishing our presence across the rest of the UK, to our more recent chapter as part of @civic_thrivingtogether.

Super excited that our New Practice (part of Civic) team have reached a major milestone our first community engagement project in Ireland! 🇮🇪

We’ve had a great time working with @islanderarchitects over the last six months to deliver an engagement programme with the residents of Garristown, just north of Dublin in Fingal County.
.
Alongside Islander Architects and Civic Ireland, we’ve been working to develop an EU-funded Smart Village Plan for a partnership of Garristown’s Vision Team and local Community Council.
.

With consistent good weather and Samuel Stair (Senior Designer) having only one episode of travel-sickness on the winding roads of Fingal, it was a great pleasure to work with local residents to build a collective vision for the village.
.
Sub-titled as a ‘Community Vision for Garristown’, our multi-phased engagement programme covered online and in-person activities, to understand both the bigger pictures concerns of the community, as well as detailed, on-the-ground challenges and opportunities.
.
The highlight of our time working in the village is the youth engagement we delivered at St. Mary’s National School, in collaboration with the local Biodiversity Group, who delivered a short info session on Swifts (do you know that once they’re born they can remain airborne for up to three years without landing?).
.
Moving forward, we’ll assist Islander Architects and Civic Ireland to translate the Community Vision into the content for the Smart Village Plan, and we look forward to sharing this progress in the coming months!

Broomhill’s first Local Place Plan is now official
.
The Broomhill Place Plan is now registered with Glasgow City Council - our first Local Place Plan in Glasgow.
.
We met the Broomhill community through Glasgow’s Liveable Neighbourhood programme, building strong local relationships that shaped the plan.
.
Highlights included ‘Painting in the Park Day’, where local young people co-designed a bespoke brand for the project.
.
The plan sets out five future narratives:
• Diverse greenspaces
• Accessible neighbourhood movement
• Community living and better dwelling
• Managing major roads
• A pleasant neighbourhood centre
.

The Residency for Ideas launched in 2024 in memory of @mackintosh.school.architecture student Emma Burke Newman (2000-2023).

The Residency is an innovative initiative designed to foster creative exploration and critical thinking among emerging architects. In addition to the £1,500 stipend, grantees receive mentoring from practitioners as they elaborate their project.
.
This program, facilitated by @_newpractice, @karakuseviccarsonarchitects, @glasgowschoolart, and Association EBN (founded by Emma’s parents), offers a unique platform for young professionals to delve into the complexities of their profession.
.
Through hands-on projects and collaborative efforts, participants are encouraged to transcend traditional architectural tools and methodologies. The residency aims to ignite imaginative conversations and fresh perspectives on familiar environments, honoring Emma and her contributions to the field.
.
For 2025, @wildworks_glasgow is digging into its Residency for Ideas.
.
Collaboration abounds this space-creating experiment into new approaches to architectural practice evolves. The ‘WildWorks Glasgow’ Residency was born after the selection committee for Residency for Ideas approached the applicants of two separate proposals with the prospect of combining their efforts. Their new proposal captured the 2025 prize. Subsequently, the four students behind the collaboration - Jim Cowie, Robin Simpson, Finlay Wellings, and Lily Whitehouse - joined WildWorks Glasgow, which is dedicating its efforts this summer to testing several ideas.
.
Furthermore, in May, WildWorks Glasgow began collaborating with Arches DIY to start a conversation about how to make an existing urban space better serve the surrounding community, which since then has been critical in shaping their Residency’s ideas.

We’re proud to unveil our latest project, The Printfield 10: Denis Law Legacy Trail.

Designed and delivered in collaboration with our friends at New Practice, this 10-point wayfinding trail celebrates one of Aberdeen’s greatest sons, Denis Law.

Based in Printfield, Denis’s childhood neighbourhood, the trail brings together storytelling, public art installations, murals and interactive design to connect people to his incredible life and legacy.

It’s been a truly collaborative, community-first placemaking project, shaped with loving input from Denis’s family, the local community and the Denis Law Legacy Trust.

Huge thanks to everyone involved. it’s been a fantastic journey which we’ll share more about soon! ❤️
