…Beginning of the End is the latest album from Portrayal of Guilt, a curious title for a band that has treated each release like a new creative start, constantly reinventing themselves since their inception less than a decade ago. These six tracks make up the entire pennines discography to date. In 2006 the 4-piece began writing their first songs in Norwich, UK, releasing them in 08 on the retroactively titled 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘋 (aka demo or free cd), the original physical copies of which were homespun and given away gratis at shows.

Coming up in the UK mid-late 2000s indie music scene, pennines shared the stage with contemporaries such as Stapleton, Hot Club de Paris, Colour, Dartz!, TTNG & other like-minded friends. Popularized by genre forebears toe and American Football, they favoured arpeggiated guitar, syncopation, staccato call-and-response harmonies & unexpected rhythm decisions. They used a clean guitar tone with no distortion or effects pedals and a DIY approach to recording, aiming for a natural representation of the songs. “One of the things I loved about pennines was the absolute lack of bullshit,” recalls singer/guitarist Henry Tremain.

Concluding in under 20 minutes with a scurried, abrupt ending that tricks the listener into expecting more, 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 is a fitting punctuation for a band whose original run resulted in a discography shorter than most albums. It feels so special to give these songs the reissue they deserve.
