Excited to get my copy of my friend Anthony Locke’s steel guitar record. I’m glad to have recorded it and I think it came out really well. Always great to hear projects on vinyl. Please go over to @anthony_locke_steel_guitar and order your own copy today!

Burning in a new tube on my custom microphone. I built this about 4 years ago on a whim with some spare parts i had laying around. It’s turned out to be one of my favorite microphones. The mic body is off the shelf, but the guts are all me. I started with my own basic design and used my skills i acquired from building amps to create the turret boards inside the mic and power supply.

It was a Texotica family reunion on my latest session. These guys have never been all together at once. Thanks to @texasbobatx for letting me borrow the “Texas Bob” model. Sounded great!

Got my new compressors all up and running! Dialed in the power supply and put them through their paces. Putting the Dymo labels on the front panel really puts the cherry on top. Now they can join their brothers in the rack. These projects take months to complete but it’s definitely satisfying to see/hear the end results. Now i get to enjoy them for the next few decades.

Made good progress wiring up the front control panel to the rest of the circuit. 75% complete at this point. Just have to wire up the meter and the ins and outs. Entering the homestretch!

Back panels on my compressors all wired up and ready to integrate into the chassis. Probably about 50% of the way done at this point. Next step- wire up all the front panel controls!

Got the heaters and power supply wired up on my new compressors. Next step-wiring the actual circuit. I’m probably a quarter of a way through all the wiring. Still a long way to go but it’ll be worth it.

I have a love/hate relationship with these old altec lipstick microphones. I’m currently in hate mode. When they are running properly they are fantastic, but unfortunately time is not kind to these mics.

Two more compressors ready for wiring. People ask”how many compressors do you need?” I say “the formula is however many compressors you own plus one!”

I’m a big fan of Dr Tremaine’s books from the 50’s and 60’s.So much useful information in them, even now.

Altec power supplies getting some much needed attention today. Hopefully they’ll give another 60+ years of service.

Original ad from Gotham Audio in 1969. Might be a chicken or the egg thing, but i suspect this might be the origin of why we call it “phantom” power. Gotham was the US distributor for Neumann microphones so this was their product they sold to power those new 48v ones.
