Two years ago I got to visit the Guelaguetza Popular, an alt protest Guelaguetza for the people, not a ticketed, money-making event for government and tourists. The slogan of this year’s Guelaguetza Popular: “Nuestra Cultura No Es Mercancía” - Our culture is not a commodity!

I’m so glad to have spent the time I did in Oaxaca. I would honest to god wander around with tears in my eyes because of how beautiful it is. I hope that as I and others enjoy this place, we learn about and support Oaxaqueños fight to keep it, in this global struggle against neo-colonization.

In Oaxaca, July is the month of the Guelaguetza, a celebration of the state’s vast, diverse, Indigenous cultural communities. The word Guelaguetza comes from a (slightly dif) Zapotec word meaning to make a gift/offering. Indigenous people of Oaxaca and the culture and art they produce are a huge part of what makes Oaxaca City so popular and so beautiful. And now, locals are rapidly being displaced by foreigners charmed by what they have created, and the ““cheap”” rents, heavy quote.
