To mark the end of my mayoral year, I hosted a reception in the Council Chamber at Brighton Town Hall – the heart of our city’s civic history.
Reflecting on my journey growing up working class, coming to education later in life, raising four children, and experiencing homelessness and domestic abuse – I was struck by how different my path has been from that of past mayors. In the Ante Room hangs a portrait of Colonel John Fawcett, our first Mayor in 1854, and I often wonder what he and others would make of who now wears the mayoral chains.
As a historian, I wanted to capture that journey by standing beside his portrait bringing past and present together to mark my year in office.
What began as a simple idea became a special collaboration with @greshamblake who created a bespoke suit for me in the Brighton & Hove tartan – a celebration of our city’s creativity and local talent. Gresham kindly shared how he was inspired during the 2014 Scottish Referendum to create a tartan that reflects our city from the greens and blues of the sea and the magnificent South Downs to a gold stripe representing the opulence of the Royal Pavilion, and pink to celebrate our vibrant LGBTQI+ community.

End of Mayoralty Celebration!
To mark the end of my mayoral year, I hosted a reception in the Council Chamber at Brighton Town Hall – the heart of our city’s civic history.
Reflecting on my journey growing up working class, coming to education later in life, raising four children, and experiencing homelessness and domestic abuse – I was struck by how different my path has been from that of past mayors. In the Ante Room hangs a portrait of Colonel John Fawcett, our first Mayor in 1854, and I often wonder what he and others would make of who now wears the mayoral chains.
As a historian, I wanted to capture that journey by standing beside his portrait bringing past and present together to mark my year in office.
What began as a simple idea became a special collaboration with @greshamblake who created a bespoke suit for me in the Brighton & Hove tartan – a celebration of our city’s creativity and local talent. Gresham kindly shared how he was inspired during the 2014 Scottish Referendum to create a tartan that reflects our city from the greens and blues of the sea and the magnificent South Downs to a gold stripe representing the opulence of the Royal Pavilion, and pink to celebrate our vibrant LGBTQI+ community.
My dear friend, the wonderfully talented photographer @chrisjepson captured the portrait in the Council Chamber. Chris has created something that goes far beyond a simple likeness. It tells a story: of a working-class woman, of resilience and change, and of a city that embraces difference and celebrates progress.
Being Mayor in a modern, diverse city like Brighton & Hove is about inclusion and representation.
