Speaking about the role of the academic and scientific community in shaping regional climate solutions at the 2026 Regional Ecological Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan, IPCC Chair Jim Skea encouraged the scientific community in Central Asia to contribute to IPCC assessment through publishing new research, adding to the existing body of scientific knowledge about climate change in this region as well as to become involved as expert reviewers of draft IPCC reports. He also encouraged governments in the region and observer organisations to nominate scientists to serve as authors on future IPCC reports.

At RES2026 in Astana, IPCC Chair Jim Skea held meetings today with Timur Sabitov, Deputy Director of Uzbekistan’s National Centre for Climate Change and Sara Pavkov, Minister of Environmental Protection of Serbia. Discussions focused on IPCC’s ongoing work in the seventh assessment cycle.

Speaking at “Early Warning Systems in Central Asia” session of the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 in Astana today IPCC Chair Jim Skea highlighted to the delegates that the IPCC will continue to emphasise the importance of early warning systems in managing the risks of climate change in the seventh assessment cycle.

Continuing the string of bilateral meetings at the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 in the Astana today, the IPCC Chair Jim Skea met with Munkhtamir Batbayar, Vice Minister of Environment & Climate Change of Mongolia. Skea encouraged more scientific research from Central Asia and government participation in IPCC's work.

At the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 in Astana, Kazakhstan, IPCC Chair Jim Skea met today with the Turkish Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, Hasan Süer. They discussed the upcoming COP31 and future cooperation.

Addressing the opening of the Central Asian Climate Change Conference the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 in Astana today, IPCC Chair Jim Skea stressed the region's unique set of climate change challenges and pointed to adaptation and mitigation options to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

IPCC has gathered over 130 experts from more than 50 countries at the FAO HQ in Rome, Italy, for the third Lead Author Meeting of the 2027 Methodology Report on Inventories for Short-lived Climate Forcers (SLCF).
The 2027 Methodology Report aims to provide clear guidance on measuring emissions of key short-lived climate-forcing substances, including nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and others, which significantly contribute to global and regional air quality and climate change.
