On 5 June, the Julia Stoschek Foundation in Berlin is pleased to host Jon Rafman for the fourth iteration of ”Screening“ a series in which artists from the Julia Stoschek Collection curate a program of films and videos drawn from the collection and beyond.

Jon Rafman is acclaimed for a multifaceted oeuvre that encompasses video, animation, photography, sculpture and installation. His quasi-anthropological works—often incorporating internet-sourced images and narrative material—investigate digital technologies and the communities they create, focusing on the losses, longings and fantasies that shape our technology-infused lives today. The Montreal-based artist turns an empathic but critical eye on the internet age, investigating experiences of alienation, nostalgia, loneliness and grief.

Jon Rafman lives and works in Los Angeles. Some of his solo exhibitions include K21 Ständehaus – Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2026), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk (2025), Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2024), 180 The Strand, London (2023), Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2022), and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2016). His work has been featured in major international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (2019), the Sharjah Biennial (2017, 2019), the Berlin Biennale (2016), Manifesta 11 (2016), and the Biennale de Lyon (2015).

Almost ready! ⏳ Artist Jon Rafman’s first solo exhibition at a German museum offers an overview of his work since 2008. Immersive, room-filling installations, videos, photographs, and fabric works use a sharp eye and dark humor to explore how we as a society deal with the internet and its constant changes.

Fast fertig! ⏳ Die erste Einzelausstellung des Künstlers Jon Rafman in einem deutschen Museum gibt einen Überblick über das Schaffen des Künstlers seit 2008. Immersive, raumfüllende Installationen, Videos, Fotografien und Stoffarbeiten zeigen mit scharfem Blick und dunklem Humor, wie wir als Gesellschaft mit dem Internet und seinen ständigen Veränderungen umgehen.
Das Ergebnis könnt ihr bei der Eröffnung am Freitag, 29. Mai, von 19 bis 22 Uhr selbst erleben. Wir freuen uns auf euch!

Nädala teos: Jon Rafman. Unenäopäevikud 2016–2019 (2019)

Kolme aasta jooksul lõi kunstnik oma unenägudest animatsioone, kasutades lihtsat 3D-tarkvara. Tulemuseks on teos, mis uurib tehnoreaalsust, videomängude esteetikat ja info ülekülluse mõju inimese psüühikale. Kahe peategelase dantelik rännak läbi düstoopiliste maastike koos sürreaalsete transformatsioonide ning veriste kokkupõrgetega on esitatud hektilise ja pidevalt koost laguneva süžeega unenäolise videomängu keeles. Eepilised arhetüüpsed müüdid, represseeritud libidinaalsed fantaasiad ning õudusunenäod loovad digiajastu internetisõltlase alateadvuse fantastilise portree, mida saadab elektroonilise muusika suurkujude Oneohtrix Point Neveri ja James Ferraro loodud helimaastik.

Over a period of three years, the artist created animations of his dreams using simple 3D software. The resulting work explores techno-reality, the aesthetics of video games, and the impact of information overload on the human psyche. The two main characters’ Dante-like journey through dystopian landscapes, complete with surreal transformations and bloody clashes, is presented in the language of a dreamlike video game with a hectic and constantly unfolding plot. Epic archetypal myths, repressed libidinal fantasies and nightmares create a fantastic portrait of the subconscious of an internet addict of the digital age, accompanied by a soundscape created by the electronic music giants Oneohtrix Point Never and James Ferraro.
