EXCLUSIVE
The BBC has circulated leaked guidance telling journalists to describe trans women as “biological males”.
Biology will not be relevant in most stories.
Language choices shape how people are understood. When relevant, less offensive terms such as ‘assigned fe/male at birth’ or ‘registered fe/male at birth’ would be better.
Clarity should not come at the cost of dignity. #bbc #humanrights #journalism #transparency #transrights
When you achieve something you never thought you could 😭
I was walking past @kings_college_london on the Strand the other day and my friend stopped me and was like ‘Isn’t that you?!’. Lo and behold it was!
The visual rupture of the make up and barrister wig will hopefully turn a few heads and make people think about the status quo and its utility.
Very surreal to see my picture - taken by the expert @frerofredo - next to the likes of Desmond tutu, Michael Morpugo etc.
Send me a picture if you go past it!

Thanks to Eliza Winter at Legal Business for this interview where we discuss the cost of visibility in a digital world, demand in a hostile climate and the sound of silence. Mention of our case McCloud v UK with @translegalclinic.

Now back from Ibiza from the Lawyer’s Retreat and processing what was, in equal parts, a professional retreat, accidental fever dream and genuinely useful reset.
The legal profession can sometimes become strangely siloed. Barristers speak only to barristers. Chambers only to chambers. But some of the most interesting conversations this week came from cross-pollination with people outside my immediate world: coaches, marketers, accountants, legal technologists, wellbeing practitioners and founders. Different industries often solve problems lawyers are only just beginning to articulate.
One thing I kept thinking about over the week was the “Who Not How” idea from Dan Sullivan — that growth often comes less from trying to do everything yourself, and more from finding brilliant people to learn from, collaborate with and build alongside.
Also a reminder that building a career and building a life are probably not separate projects.
Highlights included:
• a Kylie-esque Jesus look
• accidentally handstand-bombing @rob_law_kc interview with Trevor (more on this soon)
• becoming an unexpected DJ
• a mountain walk that briefly felt like a litigation against nature itself
• tapping the fear away with Laura
• and meeting a genuinely fab group of people I am very glad to now know
Very grateful to Kirsty Pappin and Kate Burt for putting the whole thing together, and my talk with@iamjodiehill ‘Difficult Conversations, Difficult Decisions’ went down really well.
And if you haven’t already booked for next year, why not?!

Currently in Ibiza on the Lawyers’ Retreat! 🌞
Importantly, the retreat foregrounds mental health (we’ve already done yoga, with EMDR tapping later), innovation, digital sanity, and how the legal profession can move forward by cross-pollinating more effectively with other industries such as accounting, marketing and coaching.
Me and Jodie are running a lunchtime session titled Difficult Conversations, Difficult Decisions, asking the group to reflect on what makes workplace conversations challenging, and how we can navigate them more constructively.
Very well organised by Kirsty and Kate — would highly recommend for any lawyers or legal-adjacent people looking to develop their practice while making genuinely great connections.
And yes, before anyone asks: it turns out lawyers can be fun and chill. Who knew!

Still can’t quite believe it…last night I won @thelegal500 LGBTQ+ Champion Award (for the second time)!
I’m honoured to be a voice to our community in these wild times when we don’t know how stable our rights are…
Thank you to everyone who’s supported, collaborated, challenged and backed me along the way. This one’s for all of us.
See video for some shenanigans (sober as well)!
