Simply too seated. Four bidders fought over this Matisse still life tonight at #SothebysNewYork, where it landed $48.4 million, almost double its high estimate. Watch as Helena Newman brings the hammer down after ten minutes of bidding in The Modern Evening Auction, presented in partnership with @celine.
Matisse once said that he didn’t paint the object in a still life, but “the emotion it produces upon me.” This is true for the subject of his 1919 painting, ‘La Chaise lorraine’: an everyday wooden chair. In Matisse’s hands, the wooden chair transforms into an emotional study of color and form.
The New York Sales continue Wednesday with The Modern Day Auction. Register to bid at the link in bio.
Tour the Iberian Peninsula through Joaquín Sorolla’s paintings, on view at #SothebysNewYork as part of In Residence: The Hispanic Society Sorollas. For this exhibition, the museum has loaned three Sorolla canvases from their renowned collection to exhibit at our headquarters at the Breuer.
Here, Sotheby’s Christy Coombs joins the Hispanic Society’s curators to dive deeper into Sorolla’s practice and how he captured Spanish lift in his paintings. They also speak to the significance of this residency and Sorolla’s connection to New York.

You can’t talk about the Contemporary Art world without mentioning the pioneering gallerist and collector Barbara Gladstone. Over 140 objects of art and design from her personal collection will soon head to #SothebysNewYork, revealing how Gladstone’s discerning eye extended beyond her gallery walls.
Art & Design from the Collection of Barbara Gladstone spans contemporary art, 20th-century design, prints, and photographs. It showcases how Gladstone lived with these different works in her daily life, collecting under a singular vision. Here, Sotheby’s Lisa Dennison as well as museum director and friend Kathy Halbreich speak to Gladstone’s risk-taking and commitment to the artists she championed.
Highlights from the sale include works by Alex Katz, Richard Prince and Anish Kapoor, presented alongside Yayoi Kusama sculptures, Emile-Jacque Ruhlmann chairs, and a Jean Prouvé sideboard. Register to bid for the 9 June auction at the link in bio.
Meet Gus, the 67‑million‑year‑old T. Rex that is set to become the most valuable dinosaur ever offered at auction.
As one of the largest and most complete T. Rex skeletons ever discovered, the extraordinary 40-foot fossil will star in the Natural History Auction at #SothebysNewYork on 14 July, with an estimate of $20-30 million.
Gus is named in honor of the late Gary “Gus” Licking, a cattle rancher in Harding County, South Dakota, who owned the land where the fossil was discovered by Thomas Heitkamp and his team. Sadly, Gary passed away only one year into the excavation, never to see this magnificent discovery brought to light.
Come see Gus on view at the Breuer in New York from 1 - 14 July alongside highlights from Sotheby’s “Geek Week” sales, including Space Exploration and History of Science & Technology. Register to bid at the link in our bio.

She’s a heart breaker—and now a record breaker. Lichtenstein’s bold painting, ‘Girl in Mirror,’ achieved $6.2 million in The Contemporary Day Auction last week, presented in partnership with @celine. It's now the highest-selling work in a day sale in Sotheby’s history.
Lichtenstein used porcelain enamel on steel and his signature Benday dots to create ‘Girl in Mirror.’ It depicts a woman holding up a mirror, angled so we only see her face through this reflection. Lichtenstein alters our perception, giving the painting an unsettling sense of illusion.

The Sotheby's saleroom erupted in applause on Tuesday night as auctioneer Helena Newman dropped the final hammer on Vincent Van Gogh’s rare landscape, ‘La Moisson en Provence.’ It achieved $29 million at last night’s Modern Evening Auction, presented in partnership with @celine, making it the second-highest price for a Van Gogh work-on-paper.
‘La Moisson en Provence’ is one of eleven watercolors Van Gogh produced during his time in Arles, and it’s one of only four from this group to remain in private hands. It articulates Van Gogh’s ambitions for a renewed landscape art grounded in lived experience.
