Album of the Year
Best Hip Hop Act

This feels like a win for truth, art and the culture.
For the everyday people playing with the cards we’ve
been dealt, surviving a challenging environment but finding magic within it. For those that are no longer here, for the survivors and for our community.

I meant everything I said up there last night.

It hasn’t even sunk in.

I’m thankful beyond words.

Love.

🙏🏾

I was gonna hold off posting this (probably the nerves) but I’ve seen all the comments, the stories, felt the overwhelming love and respect. I’m being asked a lot so here it is; the official announcement:

BEING POOR IS EXPENSIVE
MY NEW ALBUM
JULY 12TH
🍞

PRE-ORDER TODAY/NOW [LINK IN BIO]
RESPECT. LOVE. THANK YOU.
-
It has been 15 years since my last album.
10 years I’ve been away from music.
5 years I’ve been considering crafting and releasing music again. I can only create when I truly believe or feel I have something to say and contribute to the scene, culture and the world.

This is a fully independent record but I don’t want you to get it because of that reason at all. I want you to get it because I believe this piece of art and artistic expression stands alone, is seminal, second to none and timeless, however that’s my belief, it’s for the people to decide, I hope you feel the same.

Creating something timeless takes time, here it is. Thank you for your patience.

Full circle moment for me. I was first introduced to acting through the theatre via my Mum, she said that she was really shy growing up and wanted her children to be able to express themselves so thought maybe theatre/singing/dance workshops would help us with that. As a child she sent me and my sister to a theatre group called Theatre Arts, I then studied Drama at GCSE level, then went onto The BRIT School to study theatre. Thank you Mum for all you poured into me.

I’m honoured to be sharing the stage at The National Theatre with Letitia Wright, Lorraine Toussaint, Wilf Scolding and a talented cast in ‘The Story’, written by Tracey Scott Wilson and directed by Clint Dyer this summer.

Happy Birthday to me.

Chapter 41

I woke up this morning filled with gratitude and thanks. I have a ritual where shortly before 12am the night before my birthday I shower off the previous year in preparation for the next. I’ve done this for as long as I can remember.

Last year was probably my most successful year, in terms of career (shows, awards, critical acclaim, music and acting), family connection, friendships, finances (or being able to manage my finances) and enjoying the moments more. I met some new friends that have improved my life and wellbeing, I used to think the slogan ‘no new friends’ was cool but actually, new, meaningful, positive, encouraging friends are necessary and good for you, and I’ve developed deeper relationships with the friends I’ve known for a long time. In my times of need I saw who showed up to support me and I am forever grateful. So, I’m not washing off the previous year completely, I will carry the great and grow from the lessons learned. I experienced some heavy loss recently which has shown me the importance of time, love and to focus on meaningful relationships with my family, friends even more and to continue to do what I love doing in life. My aim this year is to keep growing, learning and doing the best I can with the time and mind I’ve been gifted, God willing.

Love to my fellow Aquarius and the 1985’ers.

Dream. Dare. Live It.

Growing up my favourite vehicle has always been the Range Rover Sport but my brother would always tell me ‘Defender, Defender’, and I fully fully get it. It’s the toughest vehicle out. I’ve got another favourite now. I feel like I could go anywhere in the world and cut through properly in the Defender. I’d love to drive it in Dominica, Jamaica, Egypt, Ghana, Congo and more to explore, maybe a safari somewhere or do something even here in the UK, I really need to do more adventures outside by the coast or Wiltshire or Wales and enjoy the UK more, cos we do have some cool places. I went to Dakar last year and learned about the Dakar Rally history so to experience it is a real special moment.

@Defender

Recently, I have been experiencing some heavy stuff and it is making me really appreciative of everything, driving through the sands, looking up at the stars, spending time with family and good people. Even just sending my parents pictures, like ‘hey look what I’m up to!’ and going back and forth on that.

Anyway, that’s my little writing of thoughts and expression for the day.

Bless, love. Enjoy your day.

@Defender

“If you’ve got dreams, and you’ve got a passion and you’re scared to do it…do it anyway”

This has been one of the best years of my life. A milestone birthday, trip to the motherland, 2 x MOBO Award wins (Album of the Year and Best Hip Hop Act), Festival Tour (Cross the Tracks, Glastonbury, We Out Here, SXSW, COLORS and more), Ivor Novello Nomination, ‘Hostage’ released on Netflix, ‘In Flight’ released on Channel 4, more time spent with my family and friends, consistent therapy, more working out, Witness Protection pilot for FX, New Balance Made in UK, the Gorillaz Show at Copper Box and releasing my short films and releasing ‘SOLD OUT’ live at Bush Hall; those are some of the life highlights for me.

This hasn’t been the easiest year for personal reasons but I’m thankful to God for all the lessons that have been given to me and grateful for all the blessings.

Thank you to everyone for every interaction, in person or virtual, if you’ve helped me, worked with me, or just been there for me. Thank you for every like, post, message, DM, live show attended, every compliment and all the positive energy you’ve put towards me.

I wish you all a positive end to 2025, a safe transition into the new year and a positive 2026.

Happy New Year!

Love,

Ashley

Love,

Ashley

In 2019, I never went to see my Grandma before I left for a shoot in the US and I usually did when I go away for a long period. A month into my trip she passed away. Pain. It haunted me for a long time. I learned a real hard lesson there. Our loved ones are not here forever and it may feel like we have all the time in the world but life has taught me that we really don’t.

“My Dad’s an old school tough guy, I rarely see the man cry, but when his mum died, he reverted to a young child, in that moment in him, I saw I, know one day that would be me, the cycle of life.”

God bless our loved ones, may they live long lives and may the ones who are no longer rest in paradise.

I literally cried as I wrote this one but it was really healing for me on multiple levels.

Earthstrong.

“The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in…”

Amen. My granny says this prayer for me.

“Lucky that always got home safely, I only know that looking back on it now…” 🙏🏾

God bless you.

Before Granny and Grandad came to the UK from the Caribbean, they had never seen snow before ❄️

Went to the unknown so that future generations of their family could have opportunities.

God Bless that generation. Brave.

I woke up to a WhatsApp message from a friend that had watched the Bush Hall Show and it really moved me.

We really did everything independently, just me my circle, the universe and God. 🤲🏾

Love to the culture for championing me in this way, love to everyone in the ends that have put out all that positive energy for me and the album and everything else + all the ends up and down the UK and even around the world that have shown love.

I appreciate it beyond the words of this post. Thank you.

Watch the show if you can or please share with someone that you think will appreciate it.

“Pirate radio man was really there”. 🙏🏾📻

Freeze FM, Deja Vu FM, Laylow, Rinse FM, Raw FM + more, I wish I could remember them all. Good times. Young and free.

“Made (nuff) mistakes is life, no regrets gotta live with that…”

“People don’t wanna see you grow, they’re always bringing up this and that, stand in my truth, I live in that.”

Tough to live with but true.
