Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. is expecting a response from Iran on Friday on the latest proposal to end the war.
“We should know something today. We’re expecting a response from them,” he told reporters in Rome. “We’ll see what the response entails. The hope is it’s something that can put us into a serious process in negotiation.”

The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down the state’s new congressional map, dealing a blow to Democrats as they try to keep pace with Republican gerrymandering in other states.
The map would likely have resulted in four more Democratic districts, giving the party 10 out of the state’s 11 seats in Congress in the November midterms.
In a 4–3 decision, Virginia’s top court ruled that Democratic legislators had not followed proper procedure when rushing the referendum to the ballot days before last fall’s elections.
“This constitutional violation incurably taints the resulting referendum vote and nullifies its legal efficacy,” the court’s majority wrote.
It’s a major setback for the Democratic Party, which thought it had broken even or taken an advantage over Republicans when the map was approved by voters in a referendum last month.
The court’s ruling — coupled with the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision weakening the Voting Rights Act, which is leading to more GOP gerrymandering in southern states — has firmly put Republicans in the lead in the redistricting war.
The gerrymandering battle began last summer when President Trump directed Texas legislators to redraw their map mid-decade, giving the party five more favorable seats.
Democrats then sought to counter those gains, with California creating as many as five new blue-leaning districts. Other states joined the war as well, and Virginia’s referendum was seen as Democrats’ biggest victory in the battle.
Republicans, still facing an uphill climb to hang onto their congressional majorities in November, celebrated the state court’s ruling.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who helped lead the charge in Virginia, blasted the ruling as “unprecedented and undemocratic” and vowed to fight back, though it’s unclear what further steps could be taken.

C-SPAN’s “Ceasefire” — Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) and former Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) discuss whether the War Powers Act restricts President Trump’s ability to wage war in Iran, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other members of the administration say the law is unconstitutional.
“There’s one sentence in the Constitution that says the Congress has the responsibility to declare war,” Mr. Daschle said. “We fail to assert ourselves on one of the most important constitutional responsibilities if we don’t have a say on where we send our troops to lose their lives.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday called his meeting with Pope Leo XIV “very cordial” and “productive” despite tensions between the first American pontiff and the Trump administration over the war in Iran.
“I updated them on the situation with Iran, expressed our point of view about why this was important and the danger that Iran poses to the world, which is largely recognized,” he told reporters in Rome.
Pope Leo has repeatedly spoken out against the Iran war, prompting President Trump to lash out against him, accusing him of wanting Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.
“The Holy Father is a spiritual leader, first and foremost, and that’s his role to play,” Secretary Rubio said. “Obviously, the church has always interacted on behalf of a mission for peace and a respect for all of humanity. At the end, it was a very cordial and important meeting, and it’s important to share our points of view.”
Asked whether he would advise President Trump to stop attacking the pope, Secretary Rubio said: “The president will always speak clearly about how he feels about the U.S. and U.S. policy.”

President Trump traveled in the presidential motorcade Thursday evening to the reflecting pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, which is currently under renovation at his request.
The president then took questions from reporters, one of whom asked him why he was focused on aesthetic renovations to the reflecting pool amid a war with Iran and affordability issues nationwide.
“I want to keep our country beautiful and safe,” President Trump said. “Our country’s about beauty, cleanliness, safety, great people.”
He lashed out at the reporter: “It’s such a stupid question you asked,” the president said. “You can understand dirt, maybe, better than I can, but I don’t allow it.”

Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, introduced a U.N. resolution condemning Iran’s mining of the Strait of Hormuz and its efforts to impose tolls on commercial maritime traffic.
He framed the proposal as a continuation of an earlier U.N. Security Council resolution denouncing Iran’s attacks on civilian infrastructure.
“We believe in some basic, fundamental principles,” Amb. Waltz said. “Namely, the freedom of navigation for the entire world’s economy, and that’s what’s at stake here.”

Former CNN anchor and independent journalist Don Lemon on Wednesday said he was open to running for office, including the presidency.
“Why not?” Mr. Lemon told journalist Kara Swisher at the Sir Harry Evans Investigative Journalism Summit in London on Wednesday.
“I’m a man of a certain age, I’ve been around long enough, I’ve worked hard,” he continued. “I’m a completely self-made person.”
Mr. Lemon was fired from CNN in 2023 and later launched his own independent newscast, “The Don Lemon Show.”
He was arrested while reporting on an anti-ICE protest at a church in St. Paul, Minnesota, in January. He pleaded not guilty to charges of interfering with religious worship, and press freedom groups have rallied to his side, arguing the case seeks to criminalize journalism despite First Amendment protections.
