We rely on community support to host Open Sound, our free, open-to-all summer music series. Our goal is to raise at least $7000, which will allow us to host 10 nights of Open Sound, including two groups selected through our annual Open Call.

If you want to help, please donate at the link in our bio - any amount helps, and please spread the word! 🎺🎶🎷🎉

Open Source Gallery is pleased to announce Rumble ‘n’ Rattle, a project by Albrecht Fersch.

Beginning in April, Fersch will take up residency in the gallery, sourcing materials from the community to transform the space and its occupants into a participatory instrument. The resulting installation will be activated by movement and dependent on the ever-changing relationship between gallery visitors and the machines; bodies will become sound and sounds will become communication, without the need for known language.

Anyone is invited to contribute objects that can make sound and any materials that can be used for costume construction: pots, canisters, sheets of metal, wood, boxes, bells, fabrics, pans, porcelain, pipes, etc. Visitors will also have the opportunity to try on the costumes, create their own soundscapes, and participate in workshops to help create the costumes.

Albrecht Fersch is a sound, performance, installation, and action artist from Berlin, whose art thrives on exchange. Fersch makes art because the world urgently needs to maintain an open, joyful, and unbiased perspective on life. Art is a release valve for the unfamiliar and, at the same time, a mirror of everyday life; it is a means of visualization, a prism of understanding, an instrument of re-ritualization.

Join us to welcome Albrecht on Saturday, April 18th from 7-9pm!

Swunky Z will be bringing their raucous and bombastic sound to our Spring Party this year - don't miss it!

SWUNK: [soo-unk], Noun: 1. Style of music that combines swing and funk

Swunky Z —Drummer, Todd Isler, and sax player, Lily White, discovered they shared a dream: To form a brass band. This is how Swunky Z came to be. After finding the right players, they performed in the park, on the street and in front of bars.

Join us on Thursday (5/21) from 7-9pm for a final performance and artist talk by Albrecht Fersch in his exhibition, Rumble 'N' Rattle.

Through performative activation of the space, the costumes, and the instruments, movements will be translated into sound. While usually music starts and we dance to it, in Rumble ‘n’ Rattle, the dance comes first and the music will follow.

There’s so much to explore and learn about at the KoKo Lot, and our Spring Party is the biggest public event we host there every year!

The Lot is our outdoor space where we host workshops for kids, including camp KoKo, boat building, house building, medieval times, and of course Soapbox! The Lot is also home to many artistic projects: a garden created with the philosophy of reclaiming urban spaces, a classroom built by participants in our Teens Building the Future Together program, and projects built by artists-in-residence over the past several years.

We hope you’ll come check out the Lot on Friday, May 29 (6-9pm) for the Spring Party and explore all the different things we do!

The Lot is located at 440 19th Street in Brooklyn, between 8th Ave and Prospect Park W. The nearest subway stop is the 15 St-Prospect Park F & G, about an 8 minute walk. The B61, B67, and B69 buses also stop on our block.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Cocktail Party to raise funds for Open Sound - we had a great time with you! If you couldn't make it, there's still time to donate to Open Sound by visiting open-source-gallery.org/sound-fundraiser! Open Sound relies on community support to keep our summer concerts free for everyone!

A HUGE thank you to the wonderful musicians who jammed out, and to our hosts, Elke and Ben, for organizing such a wonderful event in their beautiful garden! Thank you to all of you who attended and contributed!
