Featuring a new original song “Huele a Fraude” from @OHYUNGLi and @STEFALives!

When composer Robert Ouyang Rusli was asked to score Julio Torres’s recent film, “Problemista,” they knew they had to pull out all the stops. Yet after reading the screenplay for the A24 film, Rusli was taken by how Torres told the story of an aspiring El Salvadoran toy maker navigating both the New York art world and obtaining a visa in a completely unpredictable, fantastical, and gut-wrenchingly funny way.
The film’s maximalist vision of surrealist egg paintings, cryogenics, and Craigslist demons brought out Rusli’s most sprawling, out-of-the-box musical ideas. “I went nuts on the pitch,” they explained. “But Julio is the kind of person that thrives off enthusiasm and creativity.”

Julio Torres (@spaceprincejulio) breaks down a key scene in his new film, “Problemista,” that establishes the dynamic between his character, who is embroiled in the U.S.’s immigration systems, and Tilda Swinton’s “temperamental art-world lady,” down to the meaning of their hairstyles. Swinton’s hair color is a “shade of red you get by accident,” Torres says, while his character’s cowlick is like an alien’s antenna. Watch his full commentary at the link in our bio.
“Wildly inventive and outright funny.” (@Indiewire) Julio Torres’ PROBLEMISTA is Now Available to Watch at Home!

It’s not often you come across @Problemista, Julio Torres’s surrealist comedy about a toy designer from El Salvador who makes sexting Cabbage Patch Kids feel reminiscent of a horror film.
But with an eccentric plot and a cast of melancholic characters this unhinged, composer Robert Ouyang Rusli says it was natural to come up with an imaginative score of 53 tracks that run the gamut from enigmatic to euphoric to otherworldly. @ohyungli is classically trained in 18th century Romantic-era composition and takes inspiration from rappers like Spaceghostpurrp, and they’re a longtime admirer of sample-based production by Flying Lotus. But what really informed the score of Problemista was their love of experimental ambient minimalists like William Basinski and John Cage, who realized that not all forms of repetition are the same.
“What I loved about this film was knowing I was allowed to go there, so I just had such amazing time writing these melodies and letting them soar in certain places and loop in others… combining all these disparate sounds,” Rusli says.
