Last week, Processing took the stage at @fosdem, joining thousands at this fully volunteer-run gathering and witnessing the power of the open-source community.

For 25 years, Processing has helped millions of students, artists, and designers learn to code through visual, creative projects. This trip reminded us that our future is deeply connected to the open-source ecosystem, from exploring #WebGPU and #WebAssembly to bring Processing to the browser, to building next-generation tools with #Rust ecosystem and #BevyEngine.

At its core, Processing is rooted in the belief that software literacy leads to empowerment and liberation. FOSDEM provided a space to share that vision and strengthen our connection to the global community.

Processing Community Day is a global, community-led celebration that brings together artists, designers, technologists, educators, and open-source communities across the world.

This year marks a major milestone as we celebrate 25 years of Processing with a special Processing Community Day gathering in Linz, Austria, hosted in partnership with the Ars Electronica Festival (@arselectronica). It’s a time to reflect on Processing’s history, celebrate the people who shaped it, and imagine the future together.

If your organization believes in open-source tools, creative technology, and global community building, we’d love to connect. Sponsorship includes opportunities such as festival visibility, program partnerships, and featured work on the iconic Deep Space 8K.

Interested? Email us at give@processingfoundation.org 💜

We’re heading to FOSDEM this weekend!

Moon Davé (@softmoonworld), Processing Project Lead, and Raphaël de Courville (@sableraph), Processing Community Lead, will be presenting a talk on how the landscape for learning to code has shifted dramatically and the new questions this moment raises. Can we re-imagine coding tools in ways that preserve learner agency, curiosity, and critical thinking?

We’ll share what we’re learning as stewards of Processing and how these efforts invite us to rethink creative coding’s role in the future of computer science education.

If you’re attending #FOSDEM, we’d love to connect! Come say hi 😄 (Check link in bio for talk info!)

We’re thrilled to announce that Processing has been awarded a service agreement by the Sovereign Tech Fund – a €249,900 commitment in the next two years to carry the software into its next chapter.

Processing has long been a gateway for a broad and global audience of students, educators, artists, designers, open-source contributors, and self-taught coders, many of whom are traditionally underserved by mainstream computer science education. For many learners, Processing is their first accessible entry point into programming, creative technology, and open-source participation.

Our sincere thanks to the Sovereign Tech Agency for investing in the ongoing modernization of Processing, improving stability, simplifying sketch sharing and file management, expanding contributor pathways, and building new plugins and tooling. This work keeps Processing accessible and sustainable for future generations and lays essential groundwork for bringing Processing back to the web.

And to the global Processing community: thank you for your curiosity, your creativity, and your continued commitment to learning and making together.

Processing Foundation was thrilled to connect with developers, maintainers, and contributors from around the world at this year’s GitHub Universe. From exploring the future of open-source to discussing how creative coding can make programming more accessible, it was energizing to be part of a community shaping the future of collaborative software.

The highlights:
🌸 Connecting with open-source maintainers and contributors who share our values of accessible, creative tools
🌸 Exploring how AI and agentic workflows are changing open-source development
🌸 Sharing Processing Foundation’s mission to democratize coding through creative expression
🌸 Learning from the community building the next generation of collaborative projects

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to talk about building tools that empower creators, the role of open-source in education and art, and what it means to develop in the open. These conversations reminded us why community-driven development matters and why accessible, collaborative code is essential.
