This year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week from 11-17 May is Action: for yourself, for someone else, for all of us, encouraging each one of us to take meaningful steps—big or small—to support mental health in our own lives and within our communities.
This message is being championed locally through the Healthy Tower Hamlets campaign, which highlights five preventable risk factors linked to long‑term conditions, that includes poor mental health.
The campaign aims to empower residents, challenge stigma and inspire lasting behaviour change through real stories from local people.
One of those voices is Mumtaz; a local resident, mother and health champion who bravely shared her experience of seeking help after having a baby. By taking the steps to access therapy through her GP and join a weekly fitness class, she found a supportive space that helped her rebuild confidence and wellbeing.
Her story reflects exactly what these awareness weeks are all about—taking action, reaching out and accessing support when you need it.
