With two films at this year’s @festivaldecannes — @jtfirstman’s ‘Club Kid’ and @nwrefn’s ‘Her Private Hell’ — and a newfound sense of self-confidence, Diego Calva has the wind at his back.

“Now I really feel that I have to please myself and I have to tell my own story. I’m not gonna be part of something that I don’t want to be in,” @diegocalva tells @whatcaityfound. “Before, I was in the position where I just wanted to be part of everything. For the lead characters in ‘The Beloved,’ a film about filmmaking by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, life on set becomes increasingly fraught when their personal and professional lives irrevocably blur. The same cannot be said for Marina Foïs, who appears in the film and counts the Spanish director among her friends. For @marinafois, “there’s an added pleasure and emotion when you love the person you’re working with,” she told Mastermind ahead of the film’s premiere at this year’s @festivaldecannes.

Every shot in ‘Fatherland,’ a concise black-and-white film by Paweł Pawlikowski, is perfectly lit. Here, as in his previous films ‘Cold War’ and ‘Ida,’ the Polish director illuminates the encroachment of post-war Soviet oppression in eerie-yet-beautiful monochrome.

Set in 1949, ‘Fatherland’ follows writer and Nobel laureate Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) as he returns to Germany, 16 years after he fled Nazi occupation, with his daughter, Erika (Sandra Hüller). Two films, both alike in sensuality, screened simultaneously at @festivaldecannes this week. Each depicted intense, life-altering affairs between women, but where ‘A Woman’s Life’ by Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet strove for realism, Jane Schoenbrun’s ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ went for surreal, balls-to-the-walls maximalism. What I miss a little is that private, exploratory feeling – testing and discovering backstage before everything was instantly documented. That sense of magic was special.”
