Hantaviruses are zoonotic viruses that naturally infect rodents and can occasionally spread to people.

Here’s what you need to know: what they are, how they spread, the symptoms, and how to prevent infection. #hantavirus

#WHA79 delegates met this week against a backdrop of outbreaks, conflict, division, uncertainty and constrained resources.

That is exactly the point of multilateralism: not to pretend the difficulties of our world are not there, but to address them together.

That is not automatic. It is a choice.

A choice to prioritise health.

A choice to recognise that no country can address today’s health challenges alone.

A choice to work through @who, not only as an institution, but as a shared platform for shared action.

I thank you for that choice.

Multilateralism is not easy. But it’s worth it.

As the #Ebola outbreak in the #DRC is spreading rapidly, @who is now revising our risk assessment to very high at the national level, high at the regional level, and low at the global level.

The Prime Minister @sanchezcastejon rightly so stressed that history will judge us: “And it will say whether we were capable of protecting life when we knew how to do so”.

We are one humanity. We share the same DNA.

We must work together, for #HealthForAll.

My update on the #Ebola outbreak in the #DRC and #Uganda to the #WHA79 delegates.

This outbreak, alongside the hantavirus one, shows why international threats need an international response, why the world needs the International Health Regulations, and why it needs @who.

Ten years ago, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2286, demanding the protection of healthcare in conflict.

‼️ Yet hospitals, clinics and ambulances are still under attack.
‼️ Health workers and patients continue to be affected by attacks leading to death, injury, threat, detention or abduction.

International humanitarian law is clear: healthcare must be protected.

It is not optional.

For us, change is a constant, and we will continue to change – not for the sake of change, but for the sake of the countries and people we serve.

That is why we have chosen as the theme for this year’s World Health Assembly, “Reshaping global health: a shared responsibility”. #WHA79

After having consulted the #DRC and #Uganda where the #Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus is known to be currently occurring, I determine that the epidemic constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC), as defined in the provisions of IHR.

Today is #WorldHypertensionDay.
High blood pressure - or #hypertension - often shows no warning signs, yet it increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, blindness, dementia, and other complications.

A simple blood pressure check can be life-saving.

Getting your blood pressure measured the right way helps ensure accurate results.
Incorrect positions can lead to incorrect readings.

✔ Sit with your back supported
✔ Legs uncrossed and feet flat on the floor
✔ Arm supported with the cuff at heart level
✔ Use correct cuff size
✔ Rest for at least 5 minutes before the reading
✔ Do not talk during or between measurements
✔ Avoid exercise, tea/coffee, and smoking for at least 30 minutes before reading

Small steps can make a big difference in protecting your health.
