Mario Ayala’s newest painting, Lowrider, Tumbado, TopsDrops, is of a stacked television setup composed of imagery drawn from YouTube videos that Ayala used to build the soundtrack for his CAMH exhibition, Mario Ayala: Seven Vans. Each screen isolates a distinct visual register: a playlist title card (“Puro Pinche Old School Chicano Rolas / San Antonio Westside Oldies Vol. 1”), airbrushed graphics of skulls and clowns, and a lowrider lifted on hydraulics. These images—familiar from cruising footage, oldies mixes, and looping video graphics—circulate widely online, often encountered in passing. The stacked work condenses sounds into a single composition, transforming ephemeral digital material into a sustained act of looking.
This piece is part of our CAMH PARTY Art Auction. Mario Ayala’s Lowrider, Tumbado, TopsDrops will be part of our Live Auction happening on Saturday, April 25, 2026. For more information on how to bid in person or by proxy, please visit the link in @camhouston’s bio.
Mario Ayala (b. 1991, Los Angeles, California) reimagines a contemporary landscape where identity, observation, and material presence intersect. Drawing from his experience in Southern California, his paintings bring together visual languages tied to muralism, tattooing, automobile painting, and commercial signage, alongside references to postwar movements.
Mario Ayala: Seven Vans is on view at CAMH through June 21, 2026.
