In May 1976, Isaac Stern organized the now-legendary “Concert of the Century,” which brought together some of the world’s greatest musicians in an effort to save Carnegie Hall. Fifty years later—and 135 years after the opening of the Hall—a new lineup of Carnegie Hall icons makes music history of its own.

Did you know that Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project pairs parents and caregivers with professional artists to create personal lullabies for their babies?
Through a partnership with Northwell’s @lenoxhillhospitalnyc, nearly 80 participants have written songs for their little loved ones in the NICU over the past two years. We remember saxophonist Sonny Rollins, a monumental figure in the world of jazz whose career spanned more than 60 years. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1957 as part of a “Thanksgiving Jazz” concert that featured a stunning lineup, including Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, and the Ray Charles Orchestra, among others.
Rollins’s 18th and final Carnegie Hall appearance in 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of that debut. For the performance, he was joined by drummer Roy Haynes, which The New York Times noted was the first time the two had appeared together since 1958. “The greatest living tenor saxophone player, teamed again with arguably the greatest living drummer—now that’s historic.”
